Tyran McElrath was already in trouble with the law when he sneaked through a rear window of a Northwest D.C. home last year in the course of a burglary.

Inside, the 18-year-old encountered an 81-year-old woman who was legally blind. He savagely beat her and ransacked her house.

The crime is detailed in court records that also explain how officials quickly caught the youth: He was wearing a GPS tracking device assigned to him by the city’s juvenile justice agency.

Now a report by the District’s office of the inspector general is taking issue with the use of the monitoring devices by the city’s Department of Youth Rehabilitation Services, in whose custody McElrath was before the crime and his subsequent guilty plea.

What should be done with those who are Young and Stupid, and on top of that: Violent Criminals?

Noting that “the flimsy straps that hold the device to a youth’s leg are easily removed with a knife or scissors.
They need to come up with a GPS tracking metal ankle cuff. In the meantime, if they're caught doing a crime, throw them in jail with Bubba and see how they like that.

Rich kid gets probation for drunk-driving deaths. His defense? 'Affluenza.'

A wealthy Texas teen with blood alcohol levels three times the legal limit killed four people helping a stranded motorist. His defense said he suffered from 'affluenza,' the failure of his parents to set limits.

I really don't have any sympathy for that kind of persons..especially if they kill others...lock them up and throw away the key.

I don't think there should be any leniency for kids that go to houses or whatever to steal stuff and then brutally kill someone, knowing what they are doing.

I say death penalty like an adult! Shame they don't bring it back!

These fine, upstanding citizens probably started out as teenage hoodlums.

The four thugs accused of savagely killing a young Hoboken lawyer in a New Jersey mall’s parking garage have extensive criminal histories — and one had been released from jail just four days before the slaying.

Dustin Friedland, 30, and his wife had just finished their holiday shopping when they returned to their silver 2012 Range Rover and were confronted by the four carjackers, cops said.

Karif Ford, 31, Basim Henry, 32, and Kevin Roberts, 33, all of Newark, and Hanif Thompson, 29, of Irvington, were all busted. Each is being held on $2 million bail.

The four face a slew of charges in the Dec. 15 killing, including murder, carjacking, conspiracy and weapons possession, authorities said Saturday. Authorities refused to name the triggerman who shot Friedland point-blank in the head.

All four — who face possible life sentences — have rap sheets stretching back years that include multiple burglary and drug counts.

Thompson, who has done more than a dozen stints in the Essex County Jail, was released on Dec. 11 after serving time on a burglary charge.
