Unfortunately the full article is not available, but the opening paragraph gives the idea of it.

As someone who hires and interviews, the first thing I do when I narrow down a list of candidates is start googling them and looking them up on facebook and so forth.

It is a public profile and if the person leaves it open then I consider it open game for me to find out what kind of person I will be hiring.

And that's why I use a pseudonym for things like Facebook. The idea of employers being allowed to effectively stalk you sickens me.

And this is why I can't be arsed with social media sites.

Why?

I think it is a good idea to set privacy settings or use pseudonyms, the fact is that not just employers but anyone can stalk you.

People think that they have some kind of privacy on things like Facebook but they don't it is a Social Media site, the emphasis on Social. If people put stuff up there for the whole world to see, then it is not really stalking, it is an invitation to view their life.

So in theory, it would be perfectly fine for a possible employer to tailgate you as you drive home and watch you go through your front door? Cuz shit, bro. Until you walk through your front door, you're in public.

Plus, your online life and real life could be drastically different.

That is very true, but if I am going to hire someone and pay them a salary I want to have the best person I can get and a good way to get insight to a person and know what they are like is checking out their on line activity.

It is not the same as following someone home but you would be surprised what people will put on their facebook.

If someone is an arsehole on line, then the person is an arsehole in real life.

and if someone is stupid enough to have their public profile unprotected so anyone can see them, then they are open to be looked at by anyone, including employers.

oh and one more thing, if a person is not careful about what they do with their personal information, then how careful will they be with our company information? Just an after thought.

I think I will save myself the trouble of thinking twice before posting on Facebook, Twitter, etc. by simply not using it in the first place. Seems like the more easier thing to do. One thing this social media stalking by employers does is it allows them to screen people for things not found on an application such as religion, sexual orientation, smoking/drinking habits as well as whether they have children or not. Doesn't sound so nice anymore when you get denied for a job because of something completely unrelated to said job or does it?

Your personal life is nobody's business but you and your family.
