Tennessee family home burns while firefighters watch

South Fulton Mayor David Crocker defended the fire department, saying that if firefighters responded to non-subscribers, no one would have an incentive to pay the fee. Residents in the city of South Fulton receive the service automatically, but it is not extended to those living in the greater county-wide area.

If they weren't going to do anything then why did they even bother to show up! Let's see how quick Mayor David Crocker would defend the fire department if it were his house and belongs burning to the ground while firefighters stood watching. Shame on all of them and they don't deserve to even be a firefighter. How the hell can you pick and choose who to help and who not to just because of a freakin $75 fee. SHAME ON THEM!!!!

I think if there were more citizens there on scene, this fire would have been put out. I know I would have been there helping this family any way I could.

I think that if there were volunteer firefighters on the scene the outcome would be different.

It's sad but keep in mind that firefigthers are no free service, they probably used state-owned funding, equipment, etc and are subject to local ordinances. What can you do, but pay up.

There is no such thing as a free lunch.

Regardless, it shouldn't matter.

Exactly, they'd feel real crappy after that now wouldn't they?

Who would they say was at fault then? Would it be criminal negligence causing death by the firefighters, or by the homeowners? If they even for a second say it was the firefighters, then they should save them. Forget money for a second.

Let's think of a metaphor. You see a child crossing the street, you slow down, but are sliding on ice, you have to hit a pole to save the child's life. Of course you would, whether or not you have the money to fix.

Good metaphor. And exactly, forget the money.
