...is it just me or are the Japanese finally starting to stand up to the Red Chinese?
Excerpt...
(New York Times) NAHA, Japan — Once a sleepy, sun-soaked backwater, this air base on the southern island of Okinawa has become the forefront of a dangerous test of wills between two of Asia’s largest powers, Japan and China.

At least once every day, Japanese F-15 fighter jets roar down the runway, scrambling to intercept foreign aircraft, mostly from China. The Japanese pilots say they usually face lumbering reconnaissance planes that cruise along the edge of Japanese-claimed airspace before turning home. But sometimes — exactly how often is classified — they face nimbler Chinese fighter jets in knuckle-whitening tests of piloting skills, and self-control.

“Intercepting fighters is always more nerve-racking,” said Lt. Col. Hiroyuki Uemura, squadron commander of the approximately 20 F-15 fighters stationed here at Naha Air Base. “We hold our ground, but we don’t provoke.”

The high-velocity encounters over the East China Sea have made the skies above these strategic waters some of the tensest in the region, unnerving Pentagon planners concerned that a slip-up could cause a war with the potential to drag in the United States. Japan’s refusal to back down over months of consistent challenges also represents a rare display of military spine by this long-dovish nation, and one that underscores just how far the rise of China and its forceful campaign to control nearby seas has pushed Japan out of its pacifist shell.

Under its nationalistic prime minister, Shinzo Abe, Japan has embarked on the most sweeping overhaul of its defense posture in recent memory. Not only has Mr. Abe reversed a decade-long decline in military spending as part of what he calls “proactive pacifism,” but his government is also rewriting laws to lift restrictions on Japan’s armed forces, which are already taking a more active role as far afield as the Gulf of Aden.

It was, in fact, a speech by Mr. Abe that included tough statements on the Islamic State and an aid package to fight extremism that the militants cited as the reason they beheaded two Japanese hostages in January. Videos showing the men’s bodies, posted online, gained Mr. Abe some traction for his notion that Japan must be more prepared to take on those who mean it harm.

At the heart of Mr. Abe’s strategy is a drive to create a more public profile for Japan’s military, the Self-Defense Forces, which have been strictly limited to defending the Japanese homeland since their creation in 1954, and which for decades afterward were barely acknowledged by a public leery of anything resembling Japan’s World War II era militarism. Although Mr. Abe still does not have enough public support for his long-stated goal of constitutional changes to permit Japan a full-fledged military, he is pushing Japan’s purely defensive armed forces into an unfamiliar role as the standard-bearer of a more assertive foreign policy, and a deterrent against a modernizing Chinese military.

“Japan is saying, ‘Uh-oh, maybe with a rising China we have to start thinking differently,’ ” said Sheila A. Smith, senior fellow for Japan studies at the Council on Foreign Relations in Washington. “For the first time since World War II, Japan is finding itself on the front line. And for the first time, it has to ask itself, what does an independent defense plan look like?”

Rebuilt after Japan’s defeat in 1945 at the encouragement of the United States, the country’s technologically advanced military took a secondary role to American forces, helping patrol strategic sea lanes in the face of a Cold War-era Soviet threat. The Self-Defense Forces’ role has expanded over the decades — Japan sent 1,000 noncombat support troops to Iraq in 2004, its biggest overseas deployment since World War II — even though the country still bars itself from possessing offensive weapons like cruise missiles considered necessary to launch full-blown attacks.

With a quarter of a million uniformed personnel, Japan has slowly built up a military larger than that of other midlevel powers like France or Israel, though still far smaller than the 2.3 million-strong People’s Liberation Army in China.

Thoughts?

Japan was stripped of it's army after WW2 and have only been able to have enough forces for defence purposes and never aggression. One needs to remember that it was Japan that brutally invaded China and were ruthless towards the Chinese.

So yes, this is a big step to again go toe to toe with China. The Chinese most certainly have not forgotten what happened to then and are not very fond of the Japanese.

To say 'oh oh' now about China is abit late, China is not rising, China has risen. The world is only lucky that so far China has shown little interest in foreign intervention and generally chose not to get involved in battles beyond their borders.

But the world is changing and one must ask how long can a super power like China sit on the sidelines since they have gone down the globalisation path and are now linked to the rest of the world.

WW3 is coming. It's going to be countries like China,Russia and much of the middle east against the rest of the world. Just pray we have a real leader then

Good.  We need another war to plague this earth and get rid of the over population.  But I don't understand why you think our government is capable of producing a real leader considering there hasn't been one in the history of this country. *shrug*

Were not over populated. Don't fall for that leftist communist bull crap. But if a WW is coming it might be good to wipe out some evil for a short period of time on this planet.

Because our country has had many good leaders in its life time. We have just seen so many sorry ones over the last two decades so many can't even remember what a true leader is.

I don't care about government, nor am I on any side of the entire joke we refer to as politics in this country. I am merely speaking based on observation about how disgusting human beings are and how desperately the earth needs to eradicate them from her beautiful environment before they can infest and ruin it much longer.  As for a good leader?  You're funny.  I like the jokes you make.

There is a storm coming alright but the real evil is hidden, it is over financial control.
At the end of 2015 1% of the worlds population will control 80% of the worlds wealth and there is a battle for the last control of the wealth

I don't have anyone, but I fail to see why this is important or relevant to the discussion about why WW3 needs to happen, if not for eradication, but a harsh reminder that things will never get better if we keep repeating history.

And one also needs to remember that their introduction to World War 2 was caused entirely by the United States once again interfering in other people's fights. By imposing trade embargoes and blocking Japanese companies in the USA from trading effectively, they did a lot of damage to Japan's economy, to the point that Emperor Hirohito finally agreed that attacking America was the only way to save face. Bearing in mind that this isn't the first time America had tried to manhandle Japan into doing what it wanted; In 1853 Commodore Perry shelled Edo Bay in order to force Abe Masahiro into signing the treaty of Kanagawa, opening Japan's ports to American ships to re-tool during whaling excursions and other invasions of Japan's water-space with rules and regulations I'm sure the US would probably not follow had roles been reversed.

Kinda ironic that now everyone is all 'good for you!' about Japan and China getting into conflict. Mainly because nowadays it's China who are playing the role of the big bad wolf, whilst Japan is cast as Little Red.

WW2 in Europe and the Pacific was long under way before we got involved. The U.S had next to nothing to do with WW2. The people were very much into staying out of any of the conflicts. And America deciding we don't want to sell a product to a country well under way wreaking havoc against china and other nations was not us getting involved.

America sold or lent arms to the Allies very close to the beginning of the war, basically once Roosevelt realised that shit, we could be in trouble here. And he was actually glad of the attack on Pearl Harbour, it led to the declaration of war with Japan and because of that, Hitler declared his own war on the US, making Roosevelt's promise of not sending his troops to fight on foreign soil a lie. And with the atom bombings in 1945, the US still tried to paint Japan as the bad guys due to Pearl Harbour, despite the events leading up to it being none of the USA's business and attacking Hiroshima and Nagasaki meant millions of dead civilians, making the USA the biggest terrorist organization on the planet.

I don't condone the Sino-Japanese wars, but I don't condone America's policy of 'we should join in' either.

America did not supply materials until Germany had rolled through countries in Europe and then begun there attack on Britain. And Japan was well under way taking control of the pacific. But you think we should have not only not have helped in the war but also not supplied any weapons or materials? And have let Germany take over all of Europe develop the first atom bomb and the rockets that would have without a doubt landed in our east coast cities. Then have Japan complete its take over of the pacific and would have just instead of sooner came after Hawaii.

And he was actually glad of the attack on Pearl Harbour,

FDR was a liberal progressive piece of crap. But in his own way he loved America and the people. And unlike our current dear leader understood the need for using military force to prevent evil from spreading. He in no way was happy Pearl Harbor was attacked killing so many Americans. But like any good politician he did use it to his advantage.

it led to the declaration of war with Japan and because of that, Hitler declared his own war on the US, making Roosevelt's promise of not sending his troops to fight on foreign soil a lie.

America was attacked Europe is being rolled over of course FDR is not going to not keep that promise

Don't have to paint Japan as the bad guys they were the bad guys. They were the ones who had plans to dominate the Pacific and killed indiscriminately while doing germ warfare experiments on the Chinese. My grandfather fighting in WW2 saw very clearly what the Japanese did to the Philippine people while he was there.

I don't condone the Sino-Japanese wars, but I don't condone America's policy of 'we should join in' either.

Thank god not enough people thought that way at the time.
