WhatsApp, the popular app which allows people to message each other over 3G and wifi, has hit a new record with a total 10bn messages sent and received in one day.

People behind the app, which is being labelled a ‘text message killer’ by technology pundits, tweeted its good news this week saying: “New daily record: 4B inbound, 6B outbound = 10b total messages a day!”

WhatsApp offers different features that you don’t get with a native texting apps – such as the ability to share photos, videos and audio notes. People download the app, scan their address book to see which friends are already signed up and invite others to join WhatsApp via a message sent through the service.

The app costs 59p on the Apple App Store and has remained in the top paid apps section for a long time.

The American company says it is not an “SMS killer”, according to The Next Web, a US technology news site. Instead it refers to itself as a “drug to get people hooked on data plans”.

It can also be used on Apple’s iPhone Touch devices, with a telephone number the app provides for the device.

However, web users should be aware that hackers and phishers have recently started using ‘WhatsApp’ requests on Facebook to lure people into scams.

People should remain vigilant about such requests.
