For about the next 15 years, carriers charged 20 cents/text message and made them fairly unviable. Yet nowadays, it's hard to imagine a world without them.

I remember that! Or they had a limit... Like 500 free texts in your plan and they'd charge you after that. Made us a lot more selective with the texts we'd send.
