Stop behind the stop sign. According to my driver's ed instructor in high school, it is correct to stop completely behind the stop sign, and then you should proceed forward if you cannot see cross traffic. The placement of stop signs are at least a couple feet from the road so it's natural to pull up past the stop sign to check for cross traffic prior to pulling out, however, that is not the correct way to stop at a stop sign
