A Thai radio show host has been jailed for five years for royal defamation, his lawyer said Tuesday, one of the first sentences passed by a military court for breaching the draconian law since a May coup.

Kathawut, 59, who presents an online radio show from overseas, was arrested on his return to Thailand in June for defaming the monarchy on his programme, according to his lawyer, who only wished to be identified as a representative of the Thai Lawyers for Human Rights.

Under Thailand's strict lese majeste rules anyone convicted of insulting the king, queen, heir or regent faces up to 15 years in prison on each count.

Shortly after seizing power on May 22, the junta vowed a crackdown on lese majeste offences.

Rights groups say there has since been a rise in both charges and convictions under the law. Most cases have been handled in civilian courts rather than military ones.

But remember, the US is intolerant and abusive.

Indonesia must stop subjecting female police recruits to physical tests in an effort to determine whether they are virgins, a leading human rights group said Tuesday, describing the practice as degrading and discriminatory.

Human Rights Watch said in a report that such tests were a longstanding practice in Indonesia, where patriarchal attitudes and practices in the security forces are common.

The report was based on interviews with female police officers and police applicants in six Indonesian cities who had undergone the so called "two-finger" test to determine whether their hymens are intact.

The requirement is even posted on the jobs website for Indonesia's national police. On Tuesday it read, "In addition to the medical and physical tests, women who want to be policewomen must also undergo virginity tests. So all women who want to become policewomen should keep their virginity."

Citing medical experts, Human Rights Watch said the physical tests are useless in determining virginity.

Who is claiming that the US is intolerant or abusive, and what is there to debate about those articles?

when it comes to the number of innocents that are killed, which current country has the highest number? :|

when it comes to the division of america and americans, comes abusive and murderous acts upon each-other, or just an illusion?

don't americans get beat up and slammed on the ground face first for simply dancing at a national museum?

don't americans get shot in the back and killed for being homeless by police?

don't american police murder innocent children in raids/search warrants?

there's a million of these, but do i really need to go on?

looks like america got the abusive part down, no? :|

As bad as America can be at times.....go back and read the opening two posts that Doc put up and then say with a straight face that America's the most-intolerant and abusive nation around; compared to some countries (China, Russia, Iran, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia & Indonesia, for starters...) we're fricken' saints...

Well then I am sure the millions of illegals that came from the prosperous and oh so free countries like Mexico will be turning around and heading for Mexico. And I am sure the people of Cuba will say my god Cuba ain't so bad after all compared to America. And I am sure the millions of enslaved women in the middle east are saying wearing that burka and having absolutely no rights is a dream come to true instead of living in America.

Millions? Really? No doubt we have grown as a police state and it needs to be stopped now. But abuse of power and murder is not in the millions every year. It is probably less then 5% of the police in America/

sad but true, eh? ;)

Now, now, I did NOT say that.

There have been no reports of witches being burned here, lately.

A/Ibom Sets Up Family Court On Child Witchcraft Stigmatisation
— Nov 19, 2014

In an effort to stop incessant stigmatisation of children as witches and wizard, government of Akwa Ibom State has set up family court in the state.

Justice Theresa Obot of the state high court who made this known in Uyo while addressing journalists said that the court was created after the commission of inquiry set up by the state government to investigate allegations of child witch craft concluded its assignment.

She explained that the court was established to investigate and prosecute cases of child witchcraft and stigmatisation in the state.

Witchcraft is a matter of grave concern in Akwa Ibom State today. It cuts across all social spheres of the people, affecting every age group.

Some murder cases reported in the state are linked to the accusation of witchcraft. The injustice meted for those accused of witchcraft is so deafening that the situation cannot go on unchecked.

Accusers often take laws into their hands and trample on the accused without regards to human rights. Victims are often lynched without consultation with judicial authorities. This act of impunity is not indiscernible in the state, and it is based on this that the family court was established.

And

November 13, 2014
An indigenous woman was burned alive at the stake in Paraguay after being accused of witchcraft and a 14-year-old girl only barely escaped a similar fate after being rescued by investigators from a remote village in the South American nation, a local prosecutor confirmed Wednesday.

Prosecutor Fany Aguilera said that members of the Mbya Guarani ethnic group tied 45-year-old Adolfina Ocampos to a wooden pole and shot arrows at her before they burned her alive. Ocampos was sentenced to death last week by the community's chief in Tahehyi, a village some 180 miles (290 kilometers) north of the capital, Asuncion. The date of the killing was unclear.

Yes! I whole heartedly deny the accuracy of that being 100% wrong. There MAY be a million complaints but no way do I believe that it actually happens.

And yet millions every year try to do anything to get out of those countries. How many millions of DESPERATE Americans try to do anything to get in the countries above? Give me a second to tally up the numbers. I almost got it. Got it! 0.

Ah yes, there's a couple of paragons of human rights, Justice...
Let's see...read Human Rights Watch's 2014 World Report, specifically, the country reports for China, Russia, Iran, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Indonesia.... *adds deadpan* ...we'll wait.

...and you still think the U.S. is an intolerant, abusive country, Justice? Apologies for what I'm about to say, ladies and gentlemen, but Justice...what Bizarro World do you live in?

No I would like to see the hundreds of millions of Muslim women free with equal rights. And I would like to see the estimated 300 hundred million radicalized Muslims dead and buried. BUT if it came down to stopping them from another attack on America or the destruction of Israel I pick all of them dead instead of us.

yes, the proof is how the american government treats it's people and steal from americans... how the government can take people's money and land and throw them in prison for no reason, and how the american government spies on it's own people as well as other nations... how the government kills innocents abroad and the law enforcement killing americans in america... how america became a tyrannical abusive and killing machine...

do you not know what the patriot act is all about that bush jr. made into law?

what world are you living in, a magical fairy-tale land? :|
