Threats Lodged At Boston-Area Hospital Over Providing Care To Trans Youth

(The Guardian) Boston children’s hospital is dealing with a campaign of threats after rightwing activists began attacking it for providing care to transgender youth, prompting a warning from the justice department.

Axios reports that the threat campaign centers around allegations the hospital provides gender-affirming care to children, and have spread to other health care facilities in the nation, including Phoenix children’s hospital and another facility in Nebraska. One of the loudest voices has been Libs of TikTok, which has 1.3 million followers on Twitter, but Boston children’s hospital says its allegations are false.

Yesterday, Rachael S Rollins, the US attorney for Massachusetts, issued a warning against people who threaten the hospital. “I want to make it clear that the Department of Justice will ensure equal protection of transgender people under the law,” she wrote. “While free speech is indeed the cornerstone of our great nation, fear, intimidation and threats are not. I will not sit idly by and allow hate-based criminal activity to continue in our District.”

An anonymous bomb threat sent a wave of first responders to Boston Children's Hospital Tuesday night, and today the investigation into that threat continues.

Following the threat, which was made by phone, Boston Police responded and set up a perimeter around the building on Longwood Avenue. The building went into soft lockdown for about 90 minutes, leaving concerned parents waiting outside for information.

"I just want to make sure my kid's safe and if anything bad is going to happen," Patricia MacArthur-Doval told NBC10 Boston Tuesday night. "I'd rather be with him, you know? I'm not from around here, so it doesn't help that I'm here by myself and I'm just really scared and I don't know what's going on."

A sweep of the building found nothing suspicious, police said. No one was hurt.

In a statement released Wednesday, the hospital stressed that safety was their top priority. "Last night, the hospital was the target of an anonymous bomb threat," hospital officials wrote in a statement. "We moved swiftly to protect our patients and employees, and we are working with law enforcement and outside experts as they closely investigate this situation. We are relieved no bomb was found and that employees and patients are safe. We remain vigilant in our efforts to battle the spread of false information about the hospital and our caregivers. We are committed to ensuring the hospital is a safe and secure place for all who work here and come here. We will provide additional information as we are able."

Police have not described the nature of the threat Tuesday night or offered any details about the potential origin.

Bomb threat? Such threats are a common thing in my country. One of the latest threats was at a shopping mall. Turned out the threat was made by that mall's security guard who didn't feel like going to work that day. Hardly anyone takes such threats serious anymore.

The right knows how to make threats and face no consequences
--The cunning ones have learned how to “just ask questions” when suggesting violence.
--Others use mob-speak and have learned what law enforcement can and can’t use to charge them.
--Many right wingers know to use the “I was JOKING!” line or the “I didn’t intend to actually DO anything I said!” response when questioned. Some will say, “I was just being hyperbolic! Everyone says stuff like that!”
--Tech savvy right wingers have learned the key words not to say on Facebook or Twitter. (Some learn the phrases and then they use the rules against their enemies and report them. Others know how to hack accounts, use banned phrases to get an account permanently banned. This recently happened to my editor at C&L who was targeted.)
--If they are on a social media platform that takes some steps to stop the threats, the offenders go into victim mode and cry they are being censored, “Just for saying mean things to doctors!” That was the actual line used by Tucker Carlson following the bomb threats to BCH!)
--Many move to right wing social media sites that don’t take any action to stop threats. (Truth Social’s policy is, “Don’t do it. But if you do, we don’t have to take any action to stop it. If anything bad happens, we aren’t liable.” The Cincinnati FBI shooter made multiple threats on line via Truth Social. )
