Do you always leave a tip when you eat at a restaurant?

Why do (or why don't) you tip your waiter/waitress?

Are you more generous or stingy with your tip?

:money:

I always tip because most waiters and waitresses are paid a base wage that is significantly lower than the regular minimum wage (typically around $2.00/hour) because it's assumed that tips will make up the difference. One of my friends works as a waitress and she is currently making $3/hour. She loves her job and with the tips she gets, she's making a decent wage overall.

The amount of tip I leave depends on the service I received. Here's a breakdown of the percentage of the tip and why:

20% for excellent service
15% for adequate service
10% for bad service

I have never understood the reasoning that a 'tip' is basis for paying pocket money for real work. When we talk about a tip, I generally understand it as a bonus for a job well done not the customers part of the paycheck.

If the person who has been serving me is good and polite to me then of course I shall leave a tip for them. If they are rude / rubbish at their job then and don't deserve a tip, then I shall not give them one. Simple as that

I don't base my tip so much of whether I received bad or good service, but mostly how much I can afford. Usually that's somewhere in the middle of 10-20 percent, so I try to hit about 15 depending.

If the waiter/waitress was a good while serving us then they good a very good tip, but if they where very rude or didn't do a very good job they don't get a very good tip.

I work at a restaurant, and I must say, it's really a shame that it's a part of the culture for tips to be the majority of the pay for the server. Servers are generally paid somewhere around $2.13/hour (the minimum wage for a server), and unless you are a very bad server, that pretty much all goes to taxes. Many people aren't really aware that servers aren't paid an actual wage, and to be honest, it's really pretty hard to blame them.

Personally, I don't eat at fancier places often because I know I'm going to end up spending a lot of money, but when I do, my goal is to tip around 20%. Acceptable percentages vary from area to area and by service, but I feel that 20% is pretty much universally considered a good tip.

I know someone who has to tip, even if the bartender or waitress is being an absolute neglectful bitch.

I only tip when I feel like it. I shouldn't feel obligated to spend extra money if I don't want to. But if the server was doing a real good job, I'll happily leave a tip.
