One of the best books ever written--

Did you read it?

Did you like it? Why or why not?

An American Classic.. That's for sure. I loved it, because it was brutally honest with many things wrong with society in that time era. It is a classic, and will withstand the test of time for many generations to come.

I have a huge disagreement with my sister about this book. She says it's the story of a black man that raped a white girl--but in my opinion that's not even a major part of the book.

It's more about prejudice, a caste system, and trying to do the right thing.

I read it back in highschool. I can't remeber much of it though.

I would say that you are both right. The plot of the story is a black man charged for raping a white girl, but it also involves a tale of prejudice and trying to do the right thing at the same time.

I am currently reading this book. As soon as I first started I fell in love with it, and Harper Lee has quickly become one of my favorite authors. This book is indeed a classic, and will live on forever as a masterpiece of American Literature.

It even won a Pulitzer Award (which is the highest literary honor)

I'd call the accusation of rape just a minor sub plot. As was the plot involving Boo Radley (which was Robert Duvall's first movie role)

But the way they were intertwined--so excellent.

I live in a small town--not as small as when I was a kid, but I remember looking at things like Scout. And as strange as it may seem, I know that town and all it's inhabitants. Not the Radleys and the Ewells, per se, but the Daughertys and the Deans and all the other sterotypical people in the book. Maybe that's why I like the book so much--it's very true to life, without being condescending.

I swear I remember it and probably read it my sophomore year, but I can't remember. Reviews won't even catch it..

It's a few years since I read it, but I still remember it as a brilliant book. Easy to read, with a strong message and a great story.

Have you read other books by this author? Any that you would recommend?

I started reading To Kill a Mockingbird a while ago. My dad recently bought the movie for $5, which I want to see, but I'll begin reading the book again beforehand.

The movie from what I remember from back in High School is pretty decent.

I don't know that I've ever seen another book by this author.

It's one of the few movies that is really true to the book.

It's been ages since I've seen the movie--I'd love to get a copy--but as I recall, there are large blocks of narration as well as some speeches from the trial that are directly taken from the book.

The screenwriters just couldn't improve upon perfection.....

This is Lee's only novel, and although she did begin writing another about a decade after To Kill a Mockingbird, she never finished it. You see, Mockingbird is one of those stories that makes writing others pointless, as it will always defeat by comparison.

Very true--when you come out of the gate with a classic, nothing else even comes close....

I have to say- I read this book and was in love.

Sad to say, the rest of my class (and my whole grade, to be honest) did not agree.

Which makes me wonder if they actually READ it and looked past the fact that some people think it should be banned, or if they just read it to read it for the grade, you know?

I know exactly what you mean. It's like they just see the N word and ignorance and can't see the book for what it is.....
