I think adult is an intentionally ambiguous term and does not correspond well to age because people develop at different speed and at different paces. This creates difficulty with legislating things like age of consent and the drinking age etc..

Alright, when I posted that I wasn't as sure how much inbreeding depression had been studied in humans, but it seems obvious that there should be some kind of deterrence against it and that it produces a variety of health problems.

They do. Most of them anyway. Some can live with a small genepool just fine, we can't...

Well small gene pools are bad in general because the forces of genetic drift will cause certain alleles to be lost and others to go to fixation which lowers diversity.



In humans diversity is important because many genes important to immune function have a ton of different possible alleles, if you go outside of your immediate family you are very likely to get alleles different from your that will result in the desired heterozygous genotype. When one mates within their immediate family, it can begin to cause some serious problems.
