Twitter unveiled its new music app today. As expected, it’s a music discovery service that helps you find new music based on what’s popular, what your friends are listening to and (surprise!) what’s trending on Twitter. The songs themselves are supplied by Rdio, Spotify and iTunes–Rdio and Spotify subscribers can link their services and play full tracks and playlists right from the Twitter Music app.
There are several components to the app. A Popular tab shows what’s trending on Twitter. Emerging helps you find new talent. Suggested is (no surprise) music targeted just for you. #NowPlaying is music that had been tweeted by people you follow. If you find a band you like, you can follow them on Twitter right from the Music app. You can search for artists you like and check out the music they are listening to. You can also tweet songs from the app itself.
Twitter Music will be available in US, Canada, the UK, Ireland, Australia and New Zealand as of today. The iOS app is available now, and a Web version is rolling out to users over the next few hours (keep trying on this page). Android users, for now at least, are left standing around like a bunch of hobos. But don’t sweat. Twitter says an Android version and more countries will be added over time.
Any of you going to use this?
