In the deep south it seems, many GOP voters aren't even dealing with the same set of facts as the rest of us when it comes to making decisions in elections.

Im Mississippi, Republican voters, when asked about Obama's religious affiliation:

12% said Christian

52% said Muslim

36% said Not sure

This is despite Obama's obvious affiliation as a Christian.

I don't see what this has to do with voting.

Or rather, I see it and despair at the ignorance and single-mindedness.

I wanna see an atheist run for president

T, you'd probably get similiar results if you asked Democrats, Libertarians, or Independents.

In fact. I'd bet on it.

But.....

Isn't this a debate asking Off Topix users to make a judgement both on the religious convictions of a public figure and others perceptions of it.

It really has nothing to do about the religious convictions of Obama, but rather the amount of misinformation and rejection of reality that is out there.

Sorry but I don't believe it is accurate to measure someone's faith at face value - the habit doesn't make the monk. It is possible for people to profess one thing and practice another.

Are you saying Obama practices a faith other than Christianity?

Every shred of empirical evidence would indicate that you are mistaken.

I like to think the voting electorate for the most part is uninformed. They would have to be to have a congress with a 1X% approval rating yet somehow get reelected. I think the main problem is this assumption most carry that between the two parties must lie the right candidate. Almost no one just sits there and thinks man both of these guys suck so I am going to vote for someone else. Then again, you can't trust anything when it comes to the government because of all the rampant lying which poses another problem for the voter who wishes to be informed. It's way too easy to be misinformed then it is to be informed and we all pay the price for it.

I thought it was from her house? And I'm pretty sure I've seen a clip on news shows with her saying that exact phrase.

You're right, that's what I remember it from.

Anywho, something like that actually plays no role in my electoral decision making.

I'm actually very informed.

That was from a past election and thus has been out of my mind for a long time, at the time of the election I had my facts straight, but the Palin jokes have nevertheless continued long after.

Additionally, Palin was not a presidential candidate, so misconceptions like that have less bearing on one's electoral decisions.

Fuck politics.

I prefer medicine.

Additionally, simply you mentioning that led me to immediately admit my folly.

If you tried to convince Smooth or one of those polled that Obama is actually Christian, as the evidence shows and his church attendance shows, you would not experience similar success.

it's understandable that you wouldn't get my meaning.
Then would you be so kind as to share your definition of a Christian with us?

I understand attending church doesn't make one a Christian, is that what you're getting at?

That's circular logic.

Plenty of Christians would behave that way (they're human after all).

You just wouldn't call them Christians anymore. Sure that makes sense (/not sarcasm), but not to everyone.

I mildly support Obama. Get over it.

What makes you doubt Mr. Obama's devotion to his Christian faith and not your friends, or other politicians?
