The overall educational system, mass market television, and everything else has been dumbed down so far, what do you expect?
You have movies that celebrate stupidity and present overall ignorance as something fun.
Those who can think and perhaps know something are labeled geeks and worse and held up for ridicule.
The average US newspaper is now written for a Seventh Grade reading level.
So how is anybody surprised that people are not smarter than a fifth grader?

First of all, the smarter than a fifth grader stuff is ridiculous. No I am not well versed in 16th century Sweedish art history, but yes I am more intelligent than a fifth grader.
The last few movies I have watched with my friends are: Fahrenheit 9/11, Capitalism A Love Story, Outfoxed, Zeitgeist (We debunked most of that though), and Creation (Biography of Charles Darwin).
The next few we are going to watch are: George Carlin's It's Bad For Ya, W. (The Bush Biography), and Religulous.
This video is rather amusing though, I find these and the videos that interview people from the tea parties about why they are there really funny.
I just was reading a book discussing how it is more likely that the peoples of hunter gatherer societies are likely more intelligent than those of industrial societies. Interesting stuff, but yes, Americans are politically stupid, and to know anything and to talk about it in a public high school is to get called a geek or be asked, why do you even care?.
