Unusual and Random Facts

RE: Amazing Facts

Only post these things if you are willing to stand behind them, as I do tend to do more "fact checking" than your average user.

The "bullet cured mentally ill man" is, oddly enough, true.
The story is from 1988
http://www.nytimes.com/1988/02/25/us/brain-wound-eliminates-man-s-mental-illness.html

The "Macy's founder" story is only partially true.
You may learn the "rest of the story" by reading an article about Isidor Straus at your leisure.

The "dark color alcoholic drink" might have a wisp of truth to it

as for the "cause of depression", believe it or not, 'overthinking' was on the list

RE: Amazing Facts

Random? I had breakfast today.
Amazing? There are people who're allergic to water.

Random Interesting Facts

What are some random interesting facts you know?

I know that in England all unmarked swans belong to the Queen.

RE: Random Interesting Facts

The oldest internet domain ever registered is Symbolics.com, that was registered on 15th March 1985. Also, only six domain names were registered in that year, until there were a lot more during the next two years, as shown on this list.

Yep, another interesting fact :)

The oldest .com domain ever registered perhaps. (If that site got it right.)
No way it's the oldest domain ever registered though.

RE: Random Interesting Facts

Maybe you're right... but .com is the most common domain though :P

In Hungary, a peacock's feather is a sign of eternal loyalty and long-term relationship, whereas in other countries is a superstitious sign of bad luck. Zsanu of DeviantArt told me this ;P

RE: Random Interesting Facts

That's certainly true.
The oldest Internet Domain is .arpa (there, that's a random fact!)

I always thought peacock feathers were a sign of peacocks in the area :P

RE: Amazing Facts

The goo from snails is a common ingredient in many facial and body moisturizers.

RE: Amazing Facts

There's already a thread on this :P

But in all seriousness, here's my somewhat amazing fact...

In Hungary, a peacock's feather is a sign of eternal loyalty and long-term relationship, whereas in other countries is a superstitious sign of bad luck.

RE: Random Interesting Facts

Next interesting fact... The first ever video uploaded to YouTube is "Me at the zoo", which was posted on 23rd April 2005 and was from Jawed Karim, one of the co-founders of the site.

And another... there's two of these threads of the same subject D:

Another fact... "orchid" comes from the Greek word (ὄρχις órkhis) for "testicle", because of the shape of its root.

I actually found that out from a Midsomer Murders episode :P

A dog's mouth is cleaner than a human's. To back this up, I got it from this.
One of the most pervasive old wives’ tales regarding the dog is that, despite some rather execrable habits, its mouth is cleaner than any humans’. Bad news for those who enjoy smooching with their mutt: this is most definitely a myth, probably rooted in several common observations, such as the dog’s habit of licking its wounds, and the fact that a bite from a human is much more likely to get infected than a bite from a dog.
We appear to have read different articles.

Kangaroos can't jump backwards!

Just a fact check.... and something that is rare in this thread, an authoritative citation and working link.

One of the above 'facts' is only partially true.

"Snail goo moisturizer" is an ingredient in a few products. It is not "common", but it is expensive.

The Super Aqua Cell Renew Snail Skin Treatment is an essence, which is a liquid concentrated with skin actives (it’s better known as a “serum” around these parts). It contains 30% of its star ingredient, snail secretion filtrate. Like the Cell Renew products I reviewed on Monday, the ingredient list is unavailable online so I’m transcribing the ingredients list from the box:

Ingredients: Water, Snail Secretion Filtrate, Glycereth-26, Sodium Hyaluronate, Alcohol Denatured, Butylene Glycol, .....

I'll try to get to a few more of them as we go.
