Michael Schumacher, the seven-time Formula 1 champion, is "fighting for his life" after a ski accident in the French Alps, his doctors say.

The driver remains in a critical condition in hospital in Grenoble with head injuries suffered on Sunday morning at the resort of Meribel.

"We cannot tell you what the outcome will be yet," the team treating him told a news conference on Monday morning.

His family are at his bedside.

Schumacher underwent surgery on arrival at the University Hospital in Grenoble.

He remains in a coma and the medical team treating him said that they are working "hour by hour".

"All we can do is wait," they added.

Seems like his condition went downhill from yesterdays report:
Former motor racing world champion Michael Schumacher has suffered head injuries in a skiing accident.

It happened while the 44-year-old was skiing in the French resort of Meribel in the popular Three Valleys area.

It is understood he was wearing a helmet when he hit his head on a rock in an off-piste area and that he did not lose consciousness.

He was airlifted off the mountain and is now at a hospital in Grenoble.

The duty manager at the hospital told Sky News that Schumacher had been admitted and is undergoing a scan.

He said he had no further information and that ''his injuries are being examined at the moment''.

Olivier Desaulty, sales director at Meribel ski resort, told Sky that rescuers quickly reached Schumacher.

"Around 11am Michael Schumacher fell on the slopes," he said. "Well it was not really on the slopes - he was skiing a bit off piste.

"(He was) close to a slope called Mauduit and he hurt his head.

"We are sure he had a helmet - we hope it will be okay. Some security patrol got to the spot immediately to check everything and we had to ask for a helicopter to take him to the hospital."

Meribel officials have also told French media that the Formula One legend was in shock but conscious, and added that police were looking into the incident.

Bloody hell. Alot worse than what I originally read then.

Severe brain injury and he was wearing a helmet. That's must have been some pretty wicked fall he took. My hopes are for a fully recovery but it's looking very bleak right now. :(

F1 legend Michael Schumacher's manager has warned about "invalid" health reports, after one was quoted as saying his life was no longer at risk.

Schumacher remains "critical but stable" in hospital in Grenoble after a skiing accident.

A statement from Sabine Kehm said reports not from managers or doctors "must be treated as pure speculation".

Doctors began tests on stricken F1 legend Michael Schumacher's brain on Monday in a bid to precisely locate the area where he suffered massive damage in a pre-Christmas ski accident.

Germany's Bild newspaper reported on Day 15 of Schumacher's artificially induced coma that the new tests are intended to discover which parts of his brain are functioning and which are dormant.

He remains stable but critically ill.

Bild says that it has gleaned information from among the medical team treating him in Grenoble, France, that there are still great fears of 'unexpected complications,' such as a brain haemorrhage and infection.

LONDON: Doctors battling to save the life of Formula One legend Michael Schumacher reportedly have no plans to wake him from the coma.

The seven-time German world champion has been in a medically-induced coma after he suffered severe brain injuries in a French Alps skiing crash in late December.

According to the Mirror, neurosurgeons at the hospital in Grenoble where the former Ferrari racer is being treated have still not revealed any date when they may try to bring him out of the coma, while some experts fear that he may remain in a permanent vegetative state for the rest of his life.

The report mentioned that Schumacher is still classed as critically ill following the December 29 accident when he smashed his skull against a rock while skiing, and medical experts said that the prognosis for a recovery so long after being on life-support machines does not bode well.

Not sure why they are prolonging waking him up. Seems to me they are at a standstill and unsure what to do. In my opinion, the only way they'll know the extent of brain damage is to wake him up.

The impression I get is that there is something going on that has not been released to the media yet.

I totally agree with you since reportedly they have no plans to wake him from the coma. That right there sends a red flag (to me at least).
