The US is remembering the victims of the 9/11 attacks in a series of memorials marking the 12th anniversary.

Where were you when the 9/11 attacks happened?

Do you know anyone who was killed in the attacks?

I was at home when the first plane hit.

I know some individuals from the local first responder units that went north to either stand ready at stations that did respond, or went all the way into NYC that day.

However, I do have a 9/11 story how it effected me directly.

I was still working nights at the homeless shelter at the time.

The woman who was scheduled to work that night was too afraid of another attack to leave her house that afternoon. So the director called me in, and because Dover Air Force Base was on full alert, he authorized me to use whatever I thought I might need that night to ensure the security of the place. Namely, he was afraid of locals using the excuse to loot the property and possibly injure the clients.

I got down there just about the same time 7 World Trade Center collapsed. Which put an exclamation point on the entire day, if it needed another one that is.

So I spent the night walking the property smoking cigars and drinking coffee, with a live .38 on one hip, a constantly squawking police scanner on the other, and a four D cell mag light in my hand until I was relieved at 0600.

I do remember spending about half an hour talking to a state cop on the corner and both of us admitting we had no idea what was going to happen in the coming days.

But it was a quiet night otherwise.

The next morning at the state job was total chaos as various agencies went totally into "oh my god" mode.

I was at school when these happened. I think I then knew about them when I came home from it, but I also know that my mum knew them first when her ex-partner phoned her about it and ordered her to put the news on.

America really did not deserve this at all.

I was still in high school when this happend, I was in 12th grade and I saw the second one hit, live on TV during class time. Crazy stuff.

I suppose I must've been at school, it happening around 2pm on a Tuesday and all, but I don't actually remember.

And no, I don't know anyone who died.

I'd was just walking through the door after finishing work. When my mum was screaming at me, then I walked through into the lounge to see what all the comotion was about, thats when I watched the second plane hit, live on Sky News

I was at home when i got a call from my regional director at CERT. ( Central Emergency Response Team ) I was given a two minute briefing and instructed to assemble my team and be prepared to get mobile in a hour.
