The US Supreme Court has struck down a law that defines marriage as between a man and a woman only, in a landmark ruling.

The court's 5-4 vote said the Defense of Marriage Act, known as Doma, denied equal protection to same-sex couples.

The court also declined to rule on a California ban on same-sex marriage known as Proposition 8. The decision paves the way for gay unions there.

Opinion polls show that most Americans support gay marriage.

Twelve US states and the District of Columbia recognise gay marriage, while more than 30 states ban it.

'Doma writes inequality'
The Doma decision means that legally married gay men and women are entitled to claim the same federal benefits available to opposite-sex married couples.

Your thoughts on this?

Do you define marriage as between a man and a woman?

Not really. We threw out a lot of that sorta thing years ago.
Churches cannot legally wed people here.

And this from the hypocritical side of the thing:

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid called Wednesday’s Supreme Court ruling striking down the Defense of Marriage Act “a great, historic day for equality in America.”

He went on: “The idea that allowing two loving, committed people to marry would have a negative impact on anyone else, or on our nation as a whole, has always struck me as absurd.”

Pretty strong words from a guy who voted for the Defense of Marriage Act.

But Reid isn’t the only one. There was a long line of prominent Democrats Wednesday who all queued up to applaud the Supreme Court for striking down DOMA — even though they voted for it when it passed in 1996.

Even Bill Clinton — who signed the bill into law — heralded the court’s decision.

Marriage is between a man and a woman. The Supreme Court here has left it up to the states to individually decide. Which is good.
