Baltimore - Protesters rampaged through downtown Baltimore as the city's biggest demonstration yet over the death of a young African-American man in police custody turned violent.

More than 1,000 people had joined a peaceful 90-minute rally at city hall on Saturday, demanding justice for Freddie Gray, 25, who died last Sunday from spinal injuries, a week after his arrest in west Baltimore.

But the mood shifted dramatically when scores of protesters moved to the vicinity of the Camden Yards baseball stadium, scene of an evening Baltimore Orioles-Boston Red Sox game.

Twelve people were arrested, police commissioner Anthony Batts told reporters.

Local television footage showed a crowd hurling traffic cones, soda bottles and trash cans at police officers, before randomly smashing store windows, looting merchandise and vandalizing police cars.

- Varied targets -

Targets included a 7-Eleven convenience store, a Michael Kors fashion boutique, a financial services center and a cellphone shop in Baltimore's landmark Lexington Market.

Street signs were torn down, and one motorist got a rock through her car window, local news media reported. At least one city bus was also struck.

Five police cars were seen by an AFP photographer getting their windows smashed, before riot-equipped police intervened.

Tensions have been simmering in the blue-collar Mid-Atlantic port city of 620,000 as investigators try to establish the circumstances that led to Gray's death.

In a press conference Friday, officials acknowledged Gray should have received medical help at the moment of his arrest, when he was seen by bystanders -- and caught on video -- howling in apparent pain.

They also revealed that Gray, contrary to police department policy, was not buckled into his seat in the van, which made at least three unexplained stops on its way to the Western District police station.

Gray died Sunday with 80 percent of his spine severed at the neck, lawyers for his family have said. His funeral is scheduled for Monday.

Six officers have been suspended with pay as the police investigation inches closer to a May 1 deadline to submit findings to a Maryland state prosecutor, who could decide to press charges.

Thoughts?

Looting, I guess the blacks are doing their summer shopping now. They did their Christmas shopping in Ferguson. If media would stop reporting this as demonstrations and report it as crime looting, stealing and destroying property and authorities enforce the laws on the books and the courts convict them and put them away, then it will stop. Anyone caught breaking these laws should be checked to see if they have govt. housing, food stamps welfare or free medical and have it stop.

Let's protest violence by kicking the shit out of people. Brilliant.

No, more effective violence that puts them on their knees of surrender met with violence is thd most effective when it gets to that point. Shoot looters on the spot who ruin lives and jobs and amazing thing happens. Looting stops!

*deadpans* ....just another day in The Community, I suppose?:rolleyes:

Exactly.

Several times now The Community has made the statement about the sort of civilization they wish to live in.

"the law of the jungle" as it were

And then they complain when the rest of society treats them as if they were the product of the law of the jungle... *adds w/bitter deadpan* ...the ways things are going at times, maybe Lincoln shoulda' let the South go its' merry way back in 1860 and 1861...

Well, gosh, I've certainly never seen white people rioting before. And most definitely never over something so trivial!

I do not care what color they are but all should get the end of a barrel if caught doing such things whoever they are. Untold lives destroyed last night just for a excuse to steal and pillage.

But the DEMOCRAT mayor on live T.V. saying we are giving the protesters room to protest, sorry I mean destroy. Now that is something people should care about. That piece of crap woman all but endorsed the rioting.

Dispute outside church leaves 2 fatally shot, 4 injured

NEW YORK (AP) -- A dispute outside a New York City church where a funeral was taking place triggered a shooting that left two people dead and four others injured, police said.

Authorities said 15 rounds were fired at about 8:30 p.m. Monday outside Emmanuel Church of God in Brooklyn's East Flatbush neighborhood, where mourners had gathered for the funeral of a 38-year-old man who died of natural causes.

Four men and two women were struck by gunfire. Two men, ages 40 and 44, died.

Two other 40-year-old men, a 38-year-old woman and a 29-year-old woman were listed in stable condition early Tuesday.

Police believe there were multiple shooters. They said shots were fired from in front of the church and from the crowded church. It was not known how many bullets hit the church.

Several cars sped away after the shooting and no arrests have been made. Police said a silver vehicle seen near the church was stopped in a different Brooklyn neighborhood.

City Councilman Jumaane Williams, whose district includes East Flatbush, said he planned to join Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams at an anti-gun rally near the church on Tuesday to speak out about the need for measures to combat senseless acts of violence.

He told WABC-TV that the shooting was a "reckless" abandonment of life.

"If we can prevent retaliatory shootings from this particular shooting I think we will have something positive to talk about," he said. "My hope is that the law enforcement will be able to do their job and hold the shooters accountable."
