I used to be on a VPS, I would suggest you would go for http://www.ideastack.com/ , they were brilliant for my VPS when I had one and really cheap
You shouldn't need one for your forum. VPS's are quite complicated, much more than a normal host, you need to optimize your databases making sure they don't go over the RAM Burst limit, restart it every day or so, things like that.
Just get a bigger shared host, they are fine. I've run large forums off them before. www.hostgator.com or www.hawkhost.com offer great packages.

How much are you looking at spending? You have a reasonable chunk of members there, have you though about some ads for a viable revenue income?
If you're not looking to spend that much, then i'd reccomend mediatemple and their GridService hosting. $20-$30 per month gets you way above what you need, but it's best to have some room to grow.

I showed my co-admin this thread and he's looking for a second oppinion with the sales team now.
The one we were looking at was $20 a month. I don't get money from ads.
Just got another deal actually. A hosting package with hostmonster.com with free domain, also get domain whois privacy. For $5.95 a month
