Contemporary critics often argue that the war on drugs is racist. They point to evidence such as the disproportionate rate of incarceration of black men for drug offenses and various police practices that target minority communities for heightened levels of surveillance and control, such as racial profiling.

Thoughts?

Siiiiiigh. Everything now days is racist. You ask for a black coffee and it's racist, you can't win now days.

How about we debate the topic at hand instead of making in-general statements about life. yes?

My thoughts on the matter is that minorities are in fact targeted by police and they do patrol minority neighborhoods a lot more. You can fight same war on drugs in white neighborhoods and bust just as many people.

That's right. White people do it as much as other minorities do it as well. They're the ones who will secretly go to these minorities, buy the drugs from them, but rarely get caught because they're not checked as much. I bet there's tons of white people every day that travel to Mexico and smuggle drugs in.

I agree with you. It's a shame that we have such a corrupt police force. More-so on some state borders than others.

That comment was to do with the debate. It's my thoughts on the matter.

and i agree 100% with you

im in the UK so cant comment on the situation in the States but it seems that most of the drug problem in my city eminates from the area which is prominantly black so it seems fair to say thats where the police would target its work

It would seem that way if the police were doing exactly what this topic is about and mainly targeting those areas wouldn't it? Racist people turn a blind eye to what their own kind are doing it seems.

are you accusing me of being racist?

and why would they target areas which do not have a drug problem?,............thats a waste of resources

I doubt only black people in minority neighborhoods do drugs in your town. Perhaps those are the only ones who get busted so thats why it may appear that they are the only ones who do it.

How do you know there is no drug problem elsewhere? People on drugs can look / act just like you and me.

that is not what i said............you dont know my city...i do.........the majority of drug related crime (traficing/dealing/gang killings etc) is mainly down to a predominantly black area...........of course drug use is not restricted to colour........i have a relative who died only a few years ago due to a drugs overdose so this is a subject i do have some knowledge of first hand

there is a big difference between drug use and drug crime....big difference tween 'doing' drugs and 'dealing' drugs......drug crime involves the traffickers and pushers........its the gang wars that go on........its the petty crime that goes on to pay for habits..........its the prostitution that goes on to pay for habits....and that prostitution is often controlled by dealers too as part of their 'business empire'.

in my eyes drug dealers are the scum of the earth and deserve what is coming to them, no matter the colour of their skin

In my country crime in general is done more by the minorities. They are generally lower educated and have a tough time finding a job because of racism and not speaking our language well enough. In other words there's a lot more poverty in those neighbourhoods and that leads to crime, including dealing, so it's only normal they are using more resources in those areas.

I don't know the exact situation in the US though.
