No doubt, it's not an excuse, but we know Germany and Japan were drawn into war to get natural resources. In fact, Japan for instance, had invaded China, causing a blockade from the US, forcing it to go to war. However, it's easy to counter-claim that Japan had no right to invade China.

Anyway, I'm wondering if people can just trade, then why go to war? Was it the terrible situation of the Great Depression motivating the whole scene back then?

It's often because of sanctions as of why one country will invade another. For example, it's been theorized that Alaska would be the first state that Russia or China would invade for resources because it's the closest. They have been looking at it lately.

The thing about trading is because of tariffs, and you end up being reliant on another country for whatever that thing is.

If you owned the production of said thing, you’ll be self sufficient, have cheaper access to it, and not be at the whim of another country. Just look at the war in Ukraine with how that heavily affected Europe’s access to non-renewable energy, and was pretty negligent in North America.

Countries fighting over natural resources is a pretty common reason for war. Everyone wants to be the one who has it, and not the one who doesn't have it. If you don't have it, you're forced being dependent on someone else for it, and that's a recipe for disaster, especially in times of global tension/economic turmoil. Oil is the big example of this.

This is one of the reasons why there is a way. They wanted to invade a particular country to abuse its natural resources. Another thing is to prove that they are the most powerful countries. However, it should not be like this. The sad part is that this is more for personal gain.
