(Reuters) - The editor of a Saudi Arabian website could be sentenced to death after a judge cited him for apostasy and moved his case to a higher court, the monitoring group Human Rights Watch said on Saturday.

Raif Badawi, who started the Free Saudi Liberals website to discuss the role of religion in Saudi Arabia, was arrested in June, Human Rights Watch said.

Note:

Freedom of Speech does not exist under Sharia.

Sad times when an absolute monarch can't even make a change to the justice system...

Oh, the topic at hand? Well... you'd have to be pretty stupid to start a site discussing religion in Saudi Arabia...

True but isn't the death penalty a little bit too much?

Yes, obviously. That's why you shouldn't start a website like that over there, though. It's pretty much suicide.

Well, I guess he knew the risk and didn't care. Hope he thinks it was worth it.

The only freedom they ensure you is the freedom to do as they tell you. Freedom is about as welcome as a black man at a KKK meeting over there. In fact, I think even the black man is more likely to be welcomed into a KKK meeting then freedom would be welcomed in the middle east.

As long as their people are happy with being without rights will ensure it stays that way. No one else can make them free but themselves.

Like what just happened in Egypt?
They had a good shot (and sort of still do)... but if you're just gonna vote for the next oppressor, there isn't much to be done.

If one did they could almost say they aren't a racist organisation

People forget that it IS the WORLD WIDE web and try to apply American or even Western values to it.

China has other ideas:

...

They are still very paranoid about the potentially destabilizing effect of the Internet, said Willy Lam, a politics specialist at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. They are on the point of losing a monopoly on information, but they still are very eager to control the dissemination of views.

This week, China's legislature took up a measure to require Internet users to register their real names, a move that would curtail the Web's status as a freewheeling forum to complain, often anonymously, about corruption and official abuses. The legislature scheduled a news conference Friday to discuss the measure, suggesting it was expected to be approved.
