What are your thoughts on Welfare? Should the program be reformed? Are they too generous or do they not help enough?

I think it should be reformed not drastically but some. Some people really need it but some don't. I have seen women paying for food with food stamps and then getting into a cadillac but I know some people really need them.

I've seen people use Federal Emergency Morons Association, aka, FEMA, to get extremely excessive amounts of money for TINY Katrina damage.

Then they live in these huge glamorous lifestyles and never work due to welfare.

While Obama doesn't give ANY money to his poor brother...

Why not make welfare so that family pays for family?

Welfare is a predicament. I do not mind lending a hand to a person in need, feed them, support them, help them get a job, but after that, it is now their time to take control and to make ends meet. Teach others to do what you have to do to survive, not depend on the government. Once again, it is a tough situation/argument, because it is a circumstantial issue.

I don't have anything against people like your family getting welfare because you really needed it. I was just complaining about people who abused the system. I am glad it was there for you. I don't understand why your mom was denied so many times for disability. That was atrocious. I have bi-polar and i was accepted the first time. I guess it depends on how much your doctor is willing to fight for you. I am glad she finally got disability.

Ok well this is a touchy subject for me because I grew up on welfare from 9 years old (when my parents divorced) until I was 18 (when I moved out on my own) and if it wasn't for welfare, we would not have survived. My mom could not raise two kids and work. She couldn't work because she had emotional-mental problems. Depression, Anxiety, Bi-polar disorder, etc. She tried to get on disability for years and kept getting denied. Well finally she got cancer on top of all that and got on her disability. It happened just in time as she was about to get cut off welfare. Now the local law says you can only be on it for 5 years then you are cut off (I think). I think that if someone is able bodied and can work then they shouldn't be on welfare. If they are disabled then they should get on disability. Some people can't go to or afford college and can't get a good enough job that is able to pay the bills / support their family. Those people should at least get a little help from the government.

Well for starters they can stop giving it to the people that can work but are too damn lazy to do so.
Then they can access the needs better and give money based on those needs. But if the money given is used for drugs and booze then they are cut off. Money should be used for housing, food and other needs of life and the last time i checked getting drunk or high was not a need.

I don't consider having a sizeable portion of the population without any safety net a logical solution. Needless to say, I think we need a welfare system in place. Reform makes more sense, but it would be hard to change the system without it affecting others. I don't think the majority of deserving recipients should suffer the consequences of a fraudulent few. Besides, with any government program, exploitation was bound to happen. One bad apple spoils the bunch.

Our current welfare system is highly unethical.

I think we should do away with it and make it a voluntary process. People would donate if they were able to. I also think those on welfare should work if they are able and be inspected to make sure they are not cheating the system.

I'm afraid of what you mean by voluntary. It's a public welfare system not a private charity case.
