That's a different subject than the thread title.
You cannot live without things like air, water, food, reasonable shelter, etc.
But if those are given, to 'maintain sanity', which in my case is tenuous at best, I would say some sort of meaningful diversion, such as a selection of books in a language I can read, and perhaps a total lack of electronic technology.
