What Is A 'Gay Voice'?

I've dealt with that in several stories.

How to make somebody "appear" to be this or that, without directly stating the fact that "Jack's openly gay" or "Jill spends her weekends as a Gorian slave".

Most recently in the story rejected by the publisher for not being "hot enough" where several of the secondary characters were, we'll be nice here, of an alternative lifestyle.

Very, alternative.

As it is now posted on the Desk main site for casual reading (by those over the age of majority in their jurisdiction) I'll just mention the title without posting a link.

In Steamswing I wanted to 'give the impression' that all was not as it seemed with several of the people the two main characters 'fall in with', without openly stating that they 'butter their bread on both sides', or whatever, if you will. To let the reader catch on as we went that something unusual was going on with a few of them.

I found it to be both a choice of language and style, and the way the characters present themselves, more than just to say "Chuck's mannerisms were effeminate" or "Sheila was a bit Butch", or something along those lines.

It must have worked, because the publisher didn't reject it for that, but for not having enough sex scenes in it.

To me, the story wasn't about "the sex" but about the lengths an 'average Nebulous' will go to to keep his wife happy when she is something extraordinary.

I know some men whose voice isn't what you'd typically expect to hear when an adult male speaks, but, as far as I know, none of them are gay.

Normally, my voice sounds quite deep, but I can make it sound even deeper, if I want to. I can also do some voice imitations, like Yoda or Chewbacca. :P

I usually don't associate an effeminate voice with being gay (unless they have all the effeminate mannerisms to match the voice). I've known a few straight guys with no bass in their voice, its not their fault. :dontknow:

Gay? You mean effeminate. In any case, it's partly because of the length of vocal chords as well and how they're stretched longer, which makes your voice sound deeper. Along with this, nuture or environment is also a huge part of how you end up sounding, local dialect, etc. There are a lot of factors, but in this case what we consider to be a "gay voice" is stereotypically what we assume women should or do sound like.
