What makes you join? What makes you stay? Let us know!

For me:

- The theme. I really can't stay active on a forum if I have no idea about the content (for example I couldn't be active at a car forum because I don't know much about cars).

- The skin/layout - You have to admit, it's always nice when the forum looks nice. It's much more appealing that way. I generally prefer lighter skins.

- The people. If everybody there is a jerk, I can't stay. The people need to be kind and welcoming.

- Active forum, for obvious reasons.

How about you?

A nice skin as well as the general topic of the forum makes me stay. Nice people and active discussion makes me stick around.

Content--I have to know about the subject matter

skin--it has to load quickly

community--if's difficult to post somewhere if you feel uncomfortable.

If I like the people (most of them at least

), I stay. Otherwise, I'm off.

Look and usual subject matter also makes a difference, but not as much.

I agree and would also like to add that I hate forums where members attack other members. I just cannot deal with all that drama.

A place where there isnt a lot of drama.

I will admit that drama filled boards are fun to go to for a good debate/argument though when you are in the mood for one.

Generally, I have to like the people Im posting with. Enjoy the atmosphere of the forum and the type of topics that are on the forum.

A nice skin/theme, dedicated staff, a friendly atmosphere, and a lot of fun and active forums would keep me active.

The look of course, I find it very difficult to contribute my time to a website, whos owner doesn't have enough belief in the site to even put in a good effort in how the site is presented. I can't stand when I see forum owners creating way to many forums into categories, I have actually seen forums with SECTIONS actually dedicate to something that should be a topic like the Count To 1000 thousand topic yet giving it a section for itself (Stupid Cousin

), activity is highly needed however, depending on if I feel the site has a future I might still contribute a great amount to it, and of course the people have to be likable or my introduction thread will be made the same day as my departure thread.

So long as the skin doesn't look terrible, and the community is good, I'll stay,

What makes me contribute to a forum is when I see that there are many threads that I find interesting, a good staff (honestly staff can make or break a forum so in order for me to want to contribute to a forum and spend my time/energy, I'm going to want to make sure that the owners and staff are going to both appreciate my contribution and also be level headed people. Another thing that makes me contribute is seeing that other members are also contributing and actually reading and quoting replies.

Those are all the things that factor into me contributing to a forum.

People are being kind and thoughtful. It makes me feel welcome.
