What humans are capable of?
We're capable of unimaginable violence

Ambulance called to a an apartment corner,
A man stabbed for three dimes and a quarter.
Seen so many meaningful lives that perished,
When money matters more than the lives we cherish.
When emotions fuel jealousy…

You know the rest of the melody..

Calibers and automatics fire and fire away –
Open fire till they can't see the light of day.
There are many reasons we start wars,
And most of the time it's a flex of force.
One man's life is of no significance,
Nor how he lived a life of brilliance.
Just aimed rifles at opponents,
Bloody bodies dragged through the streets like rodents.
Stacked in ditches for their eternal slumber,
Life back then was only a number.
And these days we're still just as cruel…

Violence is the weapon and emotions are the fuel,
Violence starting from our early days in school,
When children are taught to react with hatred.
Hostility defiling everywhere sacred,
From apartment corners and subway stations,
And white collar investigations.
Gruesome depictions without a word of caution,
Violence is taught as the only option.
Too often is a sad song played,
Tragic stories taking men to their graves,
Fire met with fire; Hate begets aggression.
Outrage met with tension,
Pay attention…

And you know what we're capable of.

What humans are capable of?
We are capable of compassion, transgression, empathy, sorrow, and rage.
We are capable of a lot of things.

What humans are capable of?
We are capable of courage, kindness, and regret.
We are capable of a lot of things

What humans are capable of?
We are capable of depression, thought, boldness, and jealousy.
We are capable of a lot of things.

What humans are capable of?
We are capable of fear, dread, wonder, admiration, concern.
We are capable of a lot of things.

What humans are capable of?
We are capable of savagery, comprehension, heartlessness, and consolation.
We are capable of a lot of things.

What humans are capable of?

Since the dawn of mankind,
The unopened eyes of the blind,
Scapegoats to blame for why things happen.
Injustice leading to cruelty one could never fathom.
So many I watched with teary eyes,
From racism and intolerance in disguise,
Threats and slurs said.
Hatred and anger spread.
Stirring up anger among the masses,
Prejudice among social classes,
Men treated like mongrels because of their status.

Kids brought up with hate,
Carrying their own parent's weight.
Taught mistrust among the races,
Anger replaces what morality displaces.
The unopened eyes of the blind,
Senseless bigotry and hate crimes.
But in all we’ve done, never forget.

How far we’ve come and where we went.
We lend a hand and an arm,
To get a neighbor out of harm.
The ability to sympathize with a stranger.
The ability to remove the strains and pains of a stranger.
The ability to prove charity isn’t only for saints.
To carry a man on your back when he faints.
The ability to donate blood, money and a sense of concern.
We come up with cures when we share what we’ve learned,
A warm home open to those who lack,
And a peace of mind to those who are trapped.

With every breath of love.
This is what we're capable of.

What humans are capable of?
I don’t need to tell you.

We are capable of a lot of things…

You are so very talented, Fatal Dawn. This poem made me think and brought back some sad memories. Memories of innocent people who are no longer here due to the bad things humans are capable of. Thank you for sharing this brilliant poem.
