She accused the Florida leader, and Greg Abbott, the governor of Texas, who has unilaterally been bussing thousands of migrants awaiting the processing of their immigration applications in the US to Democratic-led cities New York, Washington and Chicago, of “the tactics of smugglers in places like Mexico and Guatemala”. “And for what? A photo op? Because these governors care about creating political theater, not creating actual solutions,” Jean-Pierre fumed.

She accused Republicans of treating humans like “chattel in a cruel, pre-meditated political stunt”.

While I see it as being quite a vindictive and dehumanizing move to play with people's lives like this, I do think this will energize his base. These sort of theatrics and games are quite targeted to appeal to those whose votes he is courting. There has been support forthcoming. However I am skeptical about the depth of this support when it is in direct contradiction to so many other positions. For instance the continuation of the sanctions on Venezuela.

The scene left some of the island residents who volunteered to shelter them in a church for two nights in tears. Locals had come together to donate money, toiletries and toys for the migrants. A local thrift shop donated clean clothes, restaurants took turns organizing meals and pro-bono lawyers flew in to help the migrants with paperwork and immigration cases.

They were all places that declared themselves sanctuary cities as they wanted to appear virtuous by offering themselves as sanctuary cities with no expectation that they would ever have to live up to that claim as they were far removed from the US Mexico border. What Abbot and Desantis did was force them to actually live up to the promise of being a sanctuary city expecting them to want no part of it once they actually had to become what they said they were. They exposed them as hypocrites who expect the southern states to house an endless stream of illegal migrants while they themselves wouldn't do the same. They complain of having been given no warning that they were coming as if the southern states get any warning when they come across the border.
