Uuumm... because James Cameron, Jonathan Mostow, Joseph McGinty Nichol and now Alan Taylor scared the crap out of everyone with Skynet and the scary robots from the future coming back to doom us all before they doom us all?

Doc's right, Smiley; the USG funds a crap-ton of AI research...most all of us outside of public view.
Well....if they're like the robots below at the recent DARPA Robotics Challenge, not so much...Great. So I can still hope for a big scary robot to come knockingon my doormy door down some day, yes?
