A mother abandoned her quadriplegic son in a wooded area of a Philadelphia park for nearly a week so she could visit her boyfriend in Maryland, police said.

The 21-year-old disabled man was found by a passerby on Friday night lying on leaves and covered by blankets with his wheelchair and Bible nearby, said Philadelphia police Lieutenant John Walker.

Police said the man who was abandoned in the woods is unable to talk and suffers from cerebral palsy.

Walker said authorities plan to file charges of aggravated assault and failure to care for a dependant person against the mother, whose name was not released. She is still in Maryland, Walker said.

Investigators believe the quadriplegic man may have been stuck in the woods since Monday. Officials at the school he attends became alarmed when he did not attend last week, and they called the man's mother and aunt. The aunt reported the man missing on Tuesday, police said.

"This kid cannot defend himself, he cannot function at all," Walker said at a news conference. "It could have been a lot worse than it is."

The man was taken to a Philadelphia hospital to be treated for dehydration and malnutrition.

I know it must be an endless chore to care for someone who is so debilitated, but the challenge is then in realizing he is the person suffering and you are the person who must assuage that suffering as best you can. I wish him well, and hope that he is now to be cared for by gentle, compassionate people who love him for his unique self and do not resent him for his needs.

Your thoughts?

We don't know all the facts, may be the mother has had some sort of break down and thats why she abandoned her son.

My thoughts?

Jazzy, you must be a very kind person. I could not help but notice that, even as bad as this story is (and it is!), you only found good things to say about it.

I, on the other hand, apparently am not a kind person.

Because I think mom needs to be hog-tied and left in the woods...for a month!

Without a blanket or a bible...

This.

I, however, am not nearly as *distressed* as rooster is at the discovery of what a "not a kind person" I am when it comes to my reaction/response to someone who is "not a kind person"...I'm quite comfortable with the fact, as a matter of fact.

:pin:

@Rooster

I know you weren't...that's why I typed it "*distressed*", with the little stars around it.

@Rooster

That's what it means when I use it, while frolicing in my virtual little universe, anyway. :happydance:
