So in New Zealand it was announced today this man would get 4.9 million for being wrongly imprisoned for 19 years.

Alan Hall receives New Zealand's biggest-ever compensation payout of $4.9 million for wrongful conviction

While the money may be nice it definitely won't bring back the years he wrongly lost. Would you accept this payout if this happened to you?

Yes I would accept it. But of course it wouldn’t make up for the years lost of my life. But it would mean something in terms of both lost earnings as well as the struggle to obtain future employment due to the stigma of imprisonment regardless of innocence, and lower wages even upon obtaining further employment due to a lack of experience, at least recent experience. And this creates a catch-22 situation where you require experience to gain experience 😕

This thread may be of interest to those reading this thread, btw - https://offtopix.com/threads/wrongful-imprisonment-compensation-excludes-living-cost-savings.43483/ . Unbelievable that deductions of savings made on living costs was even ever a thing in the UK, even with solid evidence of innocence. Does this occur in the USA?

Yeah, thats the equivalent of making 258k a year for the last 19 years. I don't make anywhere near that per year now :P

If I'd already been wrongfully imprisoned for the 19 years? Yes.

If I was being offered the $4.9 million now, in exchange for being imprisoned for the next 19 years? No.
You made me laugh for some reason Kyng. You’re a natural comedian and btw, that’s a compliement. You have the natural ability to lighten up serious topics. You should be a standup comedian btw. Your language is a natural match. Language is power :D

Honestly speaking, I misread your post as saying you’d already been imprisoned for 19 years and I was gonna say wow Kyng… just wow, given I know you and your high standard of integrity.. how could you go to prison let alone even be convicted of a crime 🤪😱

Thanks :) !

As for how I'd be imprisoned... maybe comedy gets outlawed or something. Then, I'd become a criminal.

Maybe we could get one of those chess boards implanted into the floor and do standup comedies, where there are 2 clones of the @Kyng and you’re constantly losing yourself or I’m losing you on my side :P

Oh and this chess board should be a bit like the hop skotch in the playground for ppl to stand representing pieces

Hehehe :3

If I'd lost those years, absolutely. You need a chance to build a life vaguely equivalent to what you would have had otherwise, you can't do that on $1,000, for instance, so at least he gets a nice foothold in life, if he's clever.

I don’t like the fact that compensation is capped at £1,000,000. It sounds unfair, because, what if the convict was previously employed at a bank and yet lost 20 years of their life die to a dimwit? A million is nowhere near enough to make up for the previous loss in earnings, future loss in earnings and mental health damage. Also consider professions like banking offer big pay rises.

Yeah, compensation should be appropriate to their previous life plus pain and suffering.
