A new toy has emerged as the must have present for children this Christmas – a colourful plastic crab called Xia-Xia.

A single crustacean, pronounced Shah Shah, is being sold every seven seconds in the United States after it recently went on sale across the Atlantic.

But while it is not scheduled to be launched in Britain until early next year, desperate parents have scrambled online to buy the hot toy.

It was claimed on Monday that some families have been forced to pay more than double the recommended retail price of £8. Some accessories cost £12.50.

Many American stores have reported the toy selling out and have struggled to meet its unprecedented demand.

According to its manufacturer the toys are “skitter-scattering, pitter-pattering, lovable, crazy crabs with shells and kooky friends”. The range features four crabs with 12 changeable shells which can crawl along and each has an extra mini-toy.

The crab is manufactured by Cepia, the firm behind Go Go Hamsters, which was a huge hit when launched in 2009. Figures show Xia-Xia toys is selling 20 per cent faster than its furry predecessor.
