Not talking about this forum necessarily.

In general, why are forum users so hostile?

I don't seem to notice that same extreme hostility from other internet things like blogs, reddit or any web page with a comment system. Sure some people aren't that friendly but it's not anything like when you enter realm of the almighty forum member!

If members are hostile on a forum then perhaps it's because the Admin and/or staff allow it to continue. Sure, not all members are going to get along but someone has to draw the line. I was on a forum where 99% of the members were from the UK. The members, including staff, made it perfectly clear that "Yanks" aren't welcome there. Gee, I didn't see anywhere on the registration that I HAD to be from the UK. It was nothing but a huge 'clique' and no way was I getting in. On another forum, it was staff flaming members and the Admin turned his back. So, maybe I'm not that far off by blaming Admin and/or staff for the hostility.

On sites where visitor communication is comment-based, most administrators tend to delete aggressive comments.

Just because you don't see the hate doesn't mean it hasn't been posted. It may well have simply been deleted. :)

Because admins don't know how to be objective and how to handle conflicts between members. They are generally biased and take the side of the members they know better, of the members that have been in the community for a longer time, without even checking to see who is right. This hurts egos, the users who are wronged rebel and it usually leads to a big drama...

I don't think forums having anything on other social media in this regard.
Have you been on Facebook, Twitter, or the worst, YouTube lately?

Sure, in 2 easy steps.

1) Find chick wearing desired shade of lipstick.
2) Kiss her until it transfers. This could take a while if she's wearing non-smudge lipstick, but keep at it. Perseverance is key!

I thought he was going for this

3) Get arrested and prosecuted for sexual harassment... :scared2:

A place to rant and rave would be my guess.

I was on one forum, which has since gone down the tubes, where a couple of the moderators seemed to take great delete in flaming users, and when you defended yourself, your comment suddenly vanished.
Well, most forums are indeed just sandboxes for their owners and moderators... :)

I think it depends what you mean by hostile. I've been on some forums that banned any sort of negative anything, and I've been on forums that didn't. I've been on forums that appear hostile at first but later discovered they were an incredibly good place to be. I've been on forums that handled the inevitable flaming that happens everywhere online by having designated areas for it. You don't want to participate in the banter, you don't have to enter that area.

Ultimately, if you're uncomfortable on a forum because of the people, just leave.

The thing about forums is, anyone can create one and set up their own rules.

Some forums welcome hostility because drama and conflicts will keep people posting.

Some forums prefer to keep a peaceful environment and that also can work wonders because people will be more inclined to chat it up in a comfortable, stress free community.

So if people are generally unpleasant on one forum and that turns you off, find one with nice people.

People are different, those that you think are hostile might believe that you are hostile. I would say that at least half or more are lost causes, but every once in a while, you'll find somebody that will actually explain his beliefs or provide explanation for them. They might not be hostile, they may merely be misunderstood.
