You might well have been scrambling your PC’s brains by accident – millions of PC users do.

If you’ve been putting your PC into Sleep mode, instead of turning it off, it’s likely your PC is getting sluggish, bad-tempered and reluctant to connect.

The good news is that you can bring it back to life very quickly indeed – by just pressing Restart.

Tech author Sharon Profis says that many of us use ‘Sleep Mode’ – where you simply close a laptop – almost by accident.

That’s bad news.

Profis says, ‘What happens next is worse than you might imagine. First there are memory leaks. Programs you clicked weeks ago still hog precious memory, preventing new programs from working properly.

‘Then your Wi-Fi starts to act weird, drivers crash, pick-ups happen, and before you know it, you can’t connect to the internet.

‘Putting your computer to sleep isn’t the solution. With the RAM still running, those memory leaks will still happen.

‘Restarting your computer is a magical way to clear all of those build-ups, wipe the slate clean and make your computer feel a little newer.

Profis’s tip works on both PCs and Macs – and she also suggests that putting computers into ‘Hibernate’ mode, rather than sleep, can help.

Do you put your PC into Sleep mode?

I do and restart when it's necessary. My ultrabook is 2012-hardwared but when it was new, I used to shut it down instead.

I don't think I ever used sleep mode on any of my computers I had over the years. If I did, it was an accident which I quickly corrected. When I'm not using my computer for a longer period of time (trips to the toilet don't count, of course :P), I make sure to turn it off.

As for restarting, I restart it several times a day to switch between my operating systems, so I'm good in that regard. :)
