Is homework necessary to form a sufficient education?

I don't think I learned discipline from doing homework.
I often wondered how it prepared us for the real world. As an adult, I go do my shift at work and then come home. There is no homework for me. I show up, do what I am supposed to do and then go home. Just like when I was in school (minus the homework part)
