Somewhat, why do we need to prove who the best swimmer is? But then again it is a global tradition that many people still look forward to, so why not do it?

I don't want to call it a waste of time and money but personally, I don't care for it much. I only really watch the short sprints like the 100m or the 400m

Of course it's a waste of time and money. Pretty much everything humans do is a waste of time and money (unless it's free, then it's just a waste of time), especially competitive sports. Who can run faster, jump higher, throw a stick further, etc. Pointless.
