Pay to be a member forums

Even if the site looks promising, like it would be a decent community or something, I still avoid these places at all costs. I'm barely active on sites that are free to join! I prefer sites that are free to join

Good thing there is a fair amount of those to choose from :D

Way Back When there were dial in BBSs that you paid for a membership to, because the owner of the board had to pay for the land lines that came into their modems that then fed the board.

But that was a lifetime ago.

There were other 'pay to post' internet forums. Maybe forumgarden "back in the day", I don't remember now, and really don't care enough to go look it up.

I joined one, whatever it was and paid for like three months or something, then never paid again. And I'm amazingly all right with that.

Interesting, what sorts of things did you talk about way back when?

I wouldn't directly pay for a forum in and of itself, as I am too used to not needing to do so. However I have gained membership to forums through paid membership when the forum was used as a means of communicating and coordinating with other members. Would that still count? I wasn't paying to join for access to the forum, but you had to be a paying member to access it.

Much like Gaia Online, they use a HEAVILY modified version of vB2, it's basically its' own software now. So while it might seem insecure, they've taken the necessary steps to put as many security measures in place as possible.

Having said that, I'd never willingly join SA or any forum like that. They're usually toxic forums and offer nothing constructive. Having a paid subscription is one thing, having to pay to be a member? No thanks.

Something Awful has been online for decades now. I never knew you had to pay to join, but I would never want to join the community for a number of reasons. First off, you'd think if they charge their members to join they would have upgraded the forums throughout the years it's been online to be on a newer version. (Or at the very least switched software since vBulletin sucks now days IMO), second off I always got an 8 Chan/Kiwi Farms vibe from them.

That's the only area I'll give them credit for, they have basically re-written the entire software to be up-to-date and more secure than any standard vB installation. It's practically completely different software, like what Gaia did with phpBB.

Totally agree, they've always pushed the boundaries a bit from what I've seen, and I wouldn't be surprised at all if they harboured at least a small group of...that sort...

I have not paid to be on a forum. I do subscribe to some sites like Wall Street Journal, Daily Wire and such for the articles and content. And, yes, I also post in the comment section. But, I would not pay to just be on a board to post comments about random subjects unless there was some type of content attached to it.
