Although if you have a very active forum, you’ll need a dedicated server to host it, and those aren’t cheap.Definitely is, bet they’re on a pretty penny
Off Topix is a well established general discussion forum that originally opened to the public way back in 2009! We provide a laid back atmosphere and our members are down to earth. We have a ton of content and fresh stuff is constantly being added. We cover all sorts of topics, so there's bound to be something inside to pique your interest. We welcome anyone and everyone to register & become a member of our awesome community.

No they’re not, I used to pay quite a lot for mineAlthough if you have a very active forum, you’ll need a dedicated server to host it, and those aren’t cheap.
Good thing there is a fair amount of those to choose fromEven if the site looks promising, like it would be a decent community or something, I still avoid these places at all costs. I'm barely active on sites that are free to join! I prefer sites that are free to join
I've donated to forums before but never had to purchase a membership.Never seen that, and I can't imagine what would make me join such a forum.
Way Back When there were dial in BBSs that you paid for a membership to, because the owner of the board had to pay for the land lines that came into their modems that then fed the board.
But that was a lifetime ago.
Interesting, what sorts of things did you talk about way back when?
Essentially the same sort of nonsense thread filler that you see on this board, and every other one still going, today.
Much like Gaia Online, they use a HEAVILY modified version of vB2, it's basically its' own software now. So while it might seem insecure, they've taken the necessary steps to put as many security measures in place as possible.Powered by: vBulletin Version 2.2.9 (SAVB-v2.2.72)

That's the only area I'll give them credit for, they have basically re-written the entire software to be up-to-date and more secure than any standard vB installation. It's practically completely different software, like what Gaia did with phpBB.Something Awful has been online for decades now. I never knew you had to pay to join, but I would never want to join the community for a number of reasons. First off, you'd think if they charge their members to join they would have upgraded the forums throughout the years it's been online to be on a newer version. (Or at the very least switched software since vBulletin sucks now days IMO),
Totally agree, they've always pushed the boundaries a bit from what I've seen, and I wouldn't be surprised at all if they harboured at least a small group of...that sort...second off I always got an 8 Chan/Kiwi Farms vibe from them.
