(The Guardian) Ye to buy right-wing social media network Parler
Some early-breaking news: Ye, formerly Kanye West, is buying the rightwing social media network Parler for an undisclosed sum, the platform announced on Monday.

The deal is expected to close in the fourth quarter of this year, the Guardian reports. News of the purchase comes a week after Twitter and Instagram locked the rapper’s accounts over antisemitic posts. “In a world where conservative opinions are considered to be controversial we have to make sure we have the right to freely express ourselves,” Ye said in a statement.

Last year, Parler was effectively forced offline for allowing violent videos of the January 6 Capitol attack to circulate on its platform.

This is only the latest in a series of controversial moves by the artist. Over the weekend, Ye claimed in a podcast appearance that George Floyd died from a drug overdose. Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin was convicted of Floyd’s murder in May 2020. Floyd’s family is considering taking legal action. And that was after Ye appeared wearing a “White Lives Matter” shirt at Paris Fashion Week.

Ugh, bad enough Trump's hate platform is still going, do we need this one back? Go be a "genius" elsewhere...

At least rename it Fish Sticks Social.

So where it already is?

He's proven in the past that he cannot run a business. It caused him to get into a tremendous amount of debt, not even Kim would save him. Perhaps he can prove us all wrong, I won't hold my breath.

Nah, I hope he carries on being himself. We don't need hate platforms hiding under the guise of free speech.

I don't know why companies don't have it in their policy to reject hate websites making the owners of those platforms delete them because they can't get any traction.

We've seen hate sites grow time and time again, 4Chan, Kiwi Farms, Parler, Truth Social...they're non-stop. They always gain traction because it's where the worst of the worst go, and they keep finding hosting, they keep finding funding, and they keep finding protections. It's disgusting, because hate is not free speech. Some of these sites have caused real-life harm to people, horrific things.

I agree. Because when people hate someone enough, the hate speech inspires violence and before you know it, they're off breaking the law. One thing leads to another.

Oh absolutely, we've seen swattings, doxing, and in the case of Kiwi Farms, they hunted down some of their victims so much that it caused them to commit suicide because they couldn't stand the harassment anymore. It's horrible the things these sites can do.

I've looked around on Kiwi farms and it's insane the lengths that their members go to, to find someone's personal information and post all of it in a thread for everyone to read. They've really run Instagram models and Youtubers off of the whole web with the amount of harassment they dish out. That shouldn't be allowed.

Not to mention how they hate on people with Autism and people with mental disorders. That's really offensive what they're doing.

Yep, they pick targets and they are just absolutely relentless in gathering information any way they can so they can hunt their target. Online harassment to start, and if that doesn't work they switch to real-life harassment. In some cases they send food to a persons house to let them know they've found them, in other cases they've taken pictures of their targets' front door and tagged them on social media. It gets REALLY scary!

We don't need hate platforms hiding under the guise of free speech.
And therein lies the rub: how do we prevent hate speech on these platforms without stifling/censoring everything else....

It's a hard, hard thing to do, but as sites are private entities, those sites can and should dictate their moderation policies with regards to acceptable content. These hate sites do not.
Elon is buying Twitter (again), Kanye is buying this platform, Trump made one of his own. What's the fad with acquiring social media uwu
It's the same thing from all of them, too, want to "preserve free speech," which means spewing hatred, so...guess they just want to use their money to allow a platform for everyone to scream at one another.

Yeah, Twitter is gonna be unprecedented though since it's on another level than the others, and Elon's motto is literally less regulation as soon as he acquires Twitter. It's gonna be a shitstorm lmao.

It's going to be everything Trump ever wanted it to be, and then some!

This is also true; private entities are free to do as they wish within the confines of the law as presently written. Problem with places like Twitter, though, is they've long played loose and fast with the ToS for years now and unfortunately more and more people are starting to call them out for it.
