Nov 30 (Reuters) - The European Union has threatened Elon Musk's Twitter with a ban unless the billionaire abides by its strict rules on content moderation, setting up a regulatory battle over the future of the social media platform, the Financial Times reported on Wednesday.

EU industry chief Thierry Breton made the threat during a video meeting with Musk on Wednesday, the FT reported, citing people with knowledge of the conversation. Breton told Musk he must adhere to a checklist of rules, including ditching an "arbitrary" approach to reinstating banned users and agreeing to an "extensive independent audit" of the platform by next year, according to the report.

Twitter and the EU did not immediately respond to Reuters' requests for comment.

Breton had previously urged Musk to comply with landmark EU rules against online hate speech and disinformation. The European Commission's justice chief Didier Reynders had also voiced similar comments.

lol, his heroic takeover to turn into right wing heaven has really not worked out too well for him. Can't wait for the collapse.

He is libertarian, it’s all about letting everyone have their say even if you deem it wrong.

Users have been it’s highest since in a decade so yeah it’s working out pretty good.

You can truly find the facists when people get nervous about people expressing views others don’t like and we have seen a lot of facists.

The fact they made a threat instead of just doing it suggests they don't really see a win for them in outright banning them hence why they are attempting to corece Musk to dancing to their tune and I doubt he is going to be willing to do that. By the way, Couldn't people in the EU if a ban were to be put into place just bypass it with a VPN? I wonder how many people were staying away from Twitter out of fear of getting arbitrarily banned for wrongthink. I suspect the numbers going up might be them coming back.

This is one of those times where Anonymous oughta' pop up and tell us, "Either change your ways or we'll change them for you."

Who do you think's gonna break then: Anonymous or Elon Musk? (especially if they decide to go after his other properties as well)

Anonymous is still a thing? I thought another hacking group was dishing out justice in this decade. I haven't heard anything about Anonymous in a few years.

They're still around, my friend; they're like the internet's version of Keyser Soze....

It’s a company that literally has people who make rockets and ultra high tech cars. Anonymous, lol!

Anonymous represents everything you don't stand for. Anonymous is against Religion and the Christian movement. Sure you want to keep buddying up with them?

Anonymous does have a Twitter account, however, which has over 276,783 followers, and it announced the church attack in a tweet on Friday that read: "HACKED Reason: religious idiocy and foh dah lulz #Anonymous #AntiSec #OWS #ROOTED #DAWKINS."

Please, keep mocking one of the most well-known hacker groups in history....

Since I keep zero important information on a computer except my entire photo catalog on a photo site and still pay bills by mail and don’t save any credit card numbers online they can fuck off. The pictures would hurt though!
