How important is it to find alternative treatments (something other than drugs) for mental illness?

I would imagine psychotherapy paired with medication is the most effective way to promote recovery. Its sad that a lot of people who are struggling with mental illness refuse to do either of those things.

But sometimes that's not enough. My ex sister in law is extremely maniacal sociopath who abuses her 3 kids. She either doesn't take her medication right or not at all and has a history of drug abuse. Really what needs to happen for someone like her is for CPS to take her kids and put them in foster homes while she's committed long term to an institution. She was neglected and abused when she was a child. She's repeating this behavior and it's unacceptable.

That's not good. I feel bad for the kids. Hopefully she isn't screwing them up too much.

Agreed, that's an instance where she definitely needs to be institutionalized until she can cope with her issues

My former mother-in-law shipped her up on a gray hound bus from Florida to Missouri when she was 15 years old to live with me and my ex wife. We couldn't control her. She didn't stay with us long, she ran off and stayed with another girl and slept from couch to couch. She was completely out of control. Instead of shipping her off to live with someone else as to shift the issues onto someone else, my mother-in-law should have had her committed long term. Her step father was very well off. He could have afforded it. He just wanted her out of the picture and I don't blame him. But what they did wasn't the answer. At least staying in an Institution for a few years would have made her straighten up a bit. Now she's even worse and all she does is cause problems. My ex brother-in-law said that he's surprised she's never gone to prison for some of the things that she's done. Her whole family just pushes her away. They really don't want anything to do with her at this point.

I don't feel sorry for her. She sent 2 men over to my house to intimidate me when we got into it with her 7 years ago; one being her boyfriend and the other was her drug dealer. All because I called her a bitch to her face and told her off. She was an accomplice in a murder that she bragged about and for whatever reason the FBI didn't charge her. She got cocky from that and threatened to have me killed several times. She's the reason why I own a gun. She deserves everything she gets.

I had a major sense of relief when I went out and bought a 9 mm from a used gun store. I didn't own any guns my entire marriage because my ex wife was anti 2nd Amendment. The relieving part was because I had something to defend myself with if she sent someone else over to threaten my life. I actually slept better.

How scary! Hopefully they were just empty threats and you never have to use that gun.
