Jason Sudeikis, Susan Sarandon and thousands of other actors have joined screenwriters for Hollywood's biggest strike in more than six decades.

Actors will not appear in films or even promote movies during the stoppage.

Major films in production, including the Avatar and Gladiator sequels, may be affected by the shutdown.

The actors are joining writers who walked out in May, concerned about pay, working conditions and the industry's use of artificial intelligence (AI).

"The whole streaming thing has shifted the paradigm," the Scottish star told BBC Newscast.

"They are trying to freeze us out and beat us into the ground, because there's a lot of money to be made in streaming and the desire is not to share it with the writers or the performers."

The two guilds want studios and streaming services to offer better pay, increased royalties, higher contributions to their pension and health plans, and safeguards on the use of AI in the industry.

With the prospect that the strike could roll on for months, cinemas could face problems, and viewers may be left with nothing new to watch bar reality TV and live sport.

Wow, I never imagined actors being disgruntled by their salary. I always assumed they were on amazing wages. Lesson of the day - never assume.

Given my views on Hollywood, it couldn't happen to a nicer bunch of .....

Actors and the networks they work for are overpaid if you really think about it.

How could you generalise?
Its' Hollywood; outside of politicians, there ain't a more self-righteous bunch anywhere and if Hollywood crashes and burns I won't particularly miss it.

I don't think they even need actors anymore with the new AI technology they're investing in and using. Most movies these days are nothing but CGI.

In the major movies I would have assumed so.
Tbf though, I have no idea how proportionately the money os distributed between the record labels and the actors, directors, writers, etc

This 10 min video should help break it down. I watched it the other day.

You’d miss the new movie and TV series releases although, unless there are already enough out there for you to catch up on :P

I'd suppose people might care more if almost everything coming out of Hollywood wasn't either a sequel, reboot/remake. Based on a movie/game/book/etc. or off a true story. I mean all those things have a place but that shouldn't be the entirety of what they are producing. Perhaps if they went back to trying out this thing called original content then people might be more open to seeing them get paid more for their work.

Also, Hollywood should keep note that no one needs them as this world was fine before they became a thing that exists and will do just fine if they stop being a thing that exists when they start making demands and threats.

Maybe you don't care, but I'm sure tons of ppl would be unhappy if they favourite sequel stopped being produced ;)

People want a sequel until that sequel is complete shit, then they don't want it. Just look at Highlander 2 or Robocop 3. Those movies are some of the worst sequels ever made in the history of movies. Sequels are the equivalent of a coin toss. Either we get something good or we get something so horrible and stupid that we wish they never EVER made it.

What about toy story? Love for that can never end.

My point is most sequels are terrible and people want quality over quantity. Sure, you get some series like Toy Story, The MCU, or Star Wars that luck out and keep getting quality sequels. But movie franchises like Terminator, Aliens, Highlander, or Underworld just keep getting really bad sequels and people are tired of paying for bad movies.

OK, which set of sequels was actually worse. Police Academy 2,3,4,5 or .....
