How many wanrnings do you give before a ban or do you just ban them without warnings?

It really depends on the severity. I would post the full infraction system I use on my forums here, but I'll just stick with my first statement. Obviously, I'm not going to treat posting pornography and flaming at the same level of offense.

i reckon posting porn should be an auto-ban along with racial discrimination, and spamming/trolling should be 3 warnings until a ban.

On my forum, I've got temporary bans after 2/3 warnings and then a permanent ban after 4 warnings.

Depends what the warnings are for, They get infraction points, depending on what they do the more points they get, 6 points = automatic ban

Well I have my moderators to set warnings like this:

1 Warning - Unofficial PM warning containing the qouted post/problem, and explanation of why that is against the rules and what will happen if it continues.

2 Warning - Moves their warning level up 1, reduces points to -90, -rep, will not earn cash from posts for a week.

3 Warning - Loss of all money features, signature and avatar are more limited.

4 BAN

But most are based on severity of the problem.

On a forum I am working on....

Three Strikes your out
Red Devils forum operates a three strike policy.User wll first recieve a polite pm then, users will be warned a maximum of three times for any and all offences in a three month period. If the need arises for a fourth warning a temporary ban will be put in place. In extreme circumstances the three strike policy will be bypassed.

Exception To The 3 Strike Rule
An exception to the three strike rule applies when users contact staff members personally (via any method) and post insulting, indecent or vulgar material. Such users may be subject to an immediate permanent ban.

For my forum, I hand out:

- two warnings for "poppycock rating" Super Mario Flash levels before ban
- three warnings for spamming
- three warnings for flaming/trolling
- one warning for bad content
- three warnings for excessive and unnecessary advertising
- three warnings for profanity
- two warnings for level theft, aka stealing levels.

"Poppycock rating", or rating a level without completing it, decreases your chance of becoming a staff member.
Spamming would be irrelevant posting.
Flaming and trolling would be arguing.
Bad content includes videos of curse words or websites containing pornography and viruses.
Excessive advertising is annoying.
My forum does not accept any bad language, so don't say it there.
If you steal a level from the original author's will, this is called "level theft". Much like shoplifting or stealing a Corvette from a dealership.

I just had too

I've rarely had the need to ban anyone.

But when I do .. I move hard and fast. No warnings. XD

They don't even see me coming :ninja: :P

Oh Lord warnings,I once got a PM that if I didn't stop they would come to my home and kick my ass......still waiting

I think it depends on the member and the situation at hand.

To go in depth I think if you have to tell someone more than once, than 3 should be the charm before you suspend their account. I also think if they don't stop, just put them on mod queu so you can look at and okay what they're posting. I believe in a permanent ban as a very last resort. Mod queu or post restriction is pretty effective unless....

They make a new account on a VPN/Proxy, if not that and its their actual IP address linked to several accounts and they get caught by a moderator or admin trying to circumvent staff disciplinary action. Than you do a permanent ban starting with all the IP addresses that they are using.

Its the only way to be sure.

I agree with this.

This. Some infractions call for an immediate ban while others can be a simple talking to and then a more serious warning. It depends.

I have not banned anyone from my forum but if I ever did I don't do warnings. Call it strict, oh well.
I'm treating people like adults. I'm not your parent. If you want to misbehave, bully, or be a creepo okay fine, you will be shown the door. I don't understand what's so hard about treating others with respect, having civil conversations, enjoying yourself, and following the rules of a community.

Nobody is perfect, people have bad days / trauma in their personal lives they are dealing with / lapses in judgement, etc etc. Sometimes people say things they don't mean and they should be able to have a chance to do better. Talking things out usually works well. Giving people warnings and chances to improve also works well most of the time too.
