Making the planet inhospitable with a combination of global warming, pollution, war, overpopulation, environmental destruction, and basically most things we do will likely bring the species to a point that we are mostly surviving instead of thriving. Then it will just be a matter of time until we start to decline and either live out our end or get killed off in a world where there isn't much to inspire to.

I tend to view humanity in a technology race with itself to develop the energy and materials needed to assend to a higher class of civilization before we kill ourselves off, and I mostly believe we are losing that race hysterically bad.
