The country is under martial law since their war with Russia, which halts elections. The country doesn't have time and there would be no point if Russia were to win tomorrow and re-assimilate Ukraine into the Russian Federation.
For months, Ukraine has been caught up in a heated debate over whether the country needs to hold a presidential election in March next year as originally scheduled.
All elections - including presidential ones - are prohibited under the country's current martial law, imposed after Russia launched its full-scale invasion in February 2022.
On the one hand, this gives anti-Ukrainian/pro-Putin forces ammunition to use agst. Ukraine by arguing that Zelensky is no better a leader/corrupt leader than Putin. On the other hand, holding a presidential election, even during a time of war, would be a major step in continuing the Western-facing turn Ukraine has made since the Maidan Revolutions of 2014.
