I think that the main motivation is laziness; once upon a time in the West there was a big influx of the "Arkies" that would do most of the 'slave labor' here.

I'm not saying that Americans like that don't exist; and it could be that our welfare system has something to do with that situation, too.
Some would rather take advantage of that than to do hard, dirty, sweaty, back-breaking work.

Social Media, TikTok, and iPhones ruined Gen Z. They're too busy chasing clout on Only Fans, YouTube, TikTok, or trying to be video game influences. It's tragic really.
Personally I'd lean toward the 'bad' side
There are sure cases when gov't handouts are truly needed; there just need to be more stringent guidelines and stricter enforcement for welfare so that the hard-working tax payers are not having to pay for the able-bodied adult freeloaders & scammers who have found an easier way to keep to keep a roof over their heads & beer in their bellies & pot in their pipes cell phones in their pockets & TVs in their living rooms.
They will if (a) the pay is there and (b) if other jobs are unavailable.
Americans have done backbreaking work in the past and they'll do it if the circumstances are there.
