Do you think its right to publicly accuse someone of something (to say someone did something really bad) on a forum without proper evidence to back it up?

Even if there was some evidence should the accusations even be publicly posted in the 1st place?

If there Is a degree of evidence, why not? If the person did some-thing really bad, maybe It would be In the Interests of others to be warned.

I agree if there is some evidence & if its relevant to the community. Although most evidence can be disproved, at least if its on the internet. Screen shots can be altered, logs can be altered, pretty much everything can be altered to make the accused look guilty.

Most often times when Ive seen one person pointing the finger at another for doing something wrong, its simply because they had a disagreement or a fight and the finger pointer just wants to punish the other person by trying to destroy their reputation.

I never pay any attention threads created to accuse someone of something. I form judgments of people based on my own experiences with them, not by what someone else has to say about them.

Well, if it was a case of a well-known spammer who's been going around messing up a lot of forums, then I don't really see the harm in bringing it up publically, especially if it was someone that everyone should be aware of. However, if it was just what it sounds like, accusations, then such topics would probably be archived straight away. If you want to warn us about someone, fine, but you must have evidence as to what that person really did was wrong. That's my take on it anyways.

If someone did something really bad they'd be banned anyway, wouldn't they?

Exactly. If it was something on another forum, but say if you really didn't believe the accusations in question, you could keep a sharp eye on the member in question, and if he does do anything, treat him like you would any other troublesome member. Whether you normally do warnings or infractions or whatever sort of warning system you have in place.

I personally think it's fine. On a huge forum that im a member of and regularly visit, there has been an issue with one member claiming to be something their not, and a few members have caught on and have started world war 3 with this member (not really but anyway) and the member posted a thread asking to have posts removed etc. and brought the admin into it, the admin who did some research on the member actually found some solid evidence that the members were right about the particular member and also found that the member had posted some threats on the admins personal blog, yet the member still persists that they are what they are even though there's proof they've been lying, it's actually quite funny to read.

That does sound like it'd be quite funny to read. Especially when you got a case of one member versus a half a dozen other members! I guess my thing is I don't particularly like public shaming like that, especially if it's in the form of hacking forums, and what made me think of this is one forum I'm a member of, someone will create a thread saying, oh, so and so's site got hacked and this is who's behind it! All it does in that case is fuel up the member in question, and he even turned against the forum in question and started blaming staff members for his dirty work. Everyone knows it's him but he's always saying, oh, don't worry, authoirties have been informed and actions will be taken against this person so this is actually why I don't allow threads of forums being hacked or whatever. We have enough to worry about without someone starting a story about a site being hacked.

Evidence is not always everything though, I agree with everyone here... but say you know someone is a killer, but you dont have any proof to prove that he is one, even though you dont have proof shouldn't you still warn others, as in the end it will save their lives regardless if you could prove it or not. Evidence isnt everything... although people out their will lie their *** off about things, that is not me, and thats not how I would handle a situation.

Evidence is everything. Ever heard of, Innocent until proven guilty. If you can't prove someone is guilty then why even accuse someone without any evidence thats like trying to say you can walk through walls without proving that you can and suspecting people to believe you.

Lol

no way.

Every board I've been on has an appeal section, which no other users except the staff can see, and so its private

It was more like a member versus 50,000 other members lol.

Whoa, now that would've been something to see! That's a lot more than six to twelve members

Yeah, well needless to say that member decided to leave the forum, so the Admin banned them, and I don't blame him, if I had a threat saying they were going to cut my throat id probably ban them too lol.

Why did this Admin not ban the member well before the member decided to leave?

I'm not a fan of regulating speech, or in the way of the Internet - text. Let each individual decide on their own what they find appropriate, and what they believe and don't believe. The people will naturally have social circles (and likely an applied bias one way or the other) that they will collectively form their own opinions. Even if some moderating action was taken. A time machine would have to be used to erase the collective memories and developed opinions on the situation, whatever it is, to truly achieve the effect moderation would seek to achieve.

The admin didn't really care he actually laughs at the threats.

He must have a very warped sense of humor to think a member threatening to slit his throat is something to laugh at.
