Action for me when it comes to console games.. I would rather the emphasis to be put on the game rather than the story.. I think too much effort on the story just incentivizes the practice of devs releasing incomplete games on purpose.. (like they do for the paid DLC b.s.)
The only exception to that for me would be mobile games.. I like when they add to the story because it often includes new levels and stuff.. but sometimes it is annoying af..
Case in point: HomeScapes..
I play all the Scapes games and while the story is usually ok, HomeScapes is annoying because you have a grown ass man and woman seemingly in their 30s who haven't grown their own balls yet so that they can nut up and tell each other that they like each other.. I honestly don't care.. but after 4 houses and 15k levels you'd think one of them would've said something by now.. (they only recently added a skip feature for the story scenes, compared to the years I've been playing the game...) it makes the story seem inauthentic because in reality someone would've probably said something by now.. especially if the 2 people have known each other since childhood, like the characters are..
Which brings me to another reason I prefer action over the story.. I don't get sucked in as easily.. I like being able pick up the game and play it without feeling as though I am being pulled into the story, which is also a marketing tactic.. and if you have a fomo that can't be ignored, then you will likely be susceptible and will end up paying for the entire game franchise..
Luckily for me, I don't have this fear, but I hate getting sucked into stuff that I generally don't care about.. which is why I also hate that that damned HomeScapes sucked me into the point where I said what I did about the characters.. LOL
